We will Continue to Promote Rule of Law, Tolerate Dissenting Voices

*PRESIDENT TINUBU AT NBA CONFERENCE:*

*Says his government’s policies, actions will soon bring enormous relief to Nigerians*

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has vowed to keep promoting the rule of law, adhere to the principles of separation of powers, and tolerate dissenting views within the ambit of the laws of Nigeria.

This, he said, explains why since he assumed office, his administration had been making steady progress in rebuilding the nation through legal and judicial reforms.

The President made the vow on Sunday when he declared open the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Lagos.

President Tinubu, who was represented at the event by his deputy, Vice President Kashim Shettima, acknowledged the association’s sterling history of championing democratic ideals, as well as promoting the rule of law.

“Let me reassure you all that this administration will continue to promote the rule of law, adherence to the principles of separation of powers and tolerance of dissent within the bounds of the law,” he declared.

The President implored Nigerian lawyers and other citizens to join hands with his administration in resolutely working towards a Nigeria of everybody’s dreams, saying the nation cannot continue to toe the path threaded in the past, if it must achieve sustainable development.

He assured that though making difficult decisions to change the way things were being done in the past would produce hard results, his administration’s policies and actions will bring relief to Nigerians very soon.

President Tinubu noted: “Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, while I acknowledge the temporal existence of some daunting challenges besetting us as a nation, I would like to urge you all not to adopt a defeatist approach; rather, we should remain resolute in working for a country of our dreams.

“It is obvious that Nigeria as a nation cannot continue to sojourn on the trajectory of the past if we must be assured of sustainable development; hence, the need to sanitize the Augean stable and chart a proper course of rebuilding the nation.

“I acknowledge that altering the status quo requires difficult decisions and changes, which also inevitably come with hard outcomes. However, I am confident that this is a passing phase and our policies and actions, as an administration, are bound to usher in relief in no distant time.”

The President thanked the Supreme Court for consistently sustaining good governance and the tenets of democracy in Nigeria, citing the recent verdict of the highest court in the land which granted financial autonomy to the local government councils.

The judgment, he noted, “will spur the much-desired developments at the grassroots level,” even as he expressed confidence “that more of such strategic and reform-oriented legal interventions will be achieved” by the third arm of government.

On the part of the executive arm, President Tinubu restated his administration’s commitment to continue making the welfare of the judiciary a top priority of his administration.

He stated: “I want to assure the Learned members of the Bench and the Bar that this government will continue to accord top priority to the welfare of the judiciary to ease avoidable burden on their Lordships and speed up the adjudicatory process which is a sine qua non for social order and economic development.

“It is, therefore, my fervent expectation that the NBA would provide the appropriate legal compass for all persons, government, and businesses towards rebuilding our dear nation”.

He outlined efforts being made by his administration in reforming the judiciary including signing the Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances) Act 2024, leading to a 300% increase in the remuneration of our judicial officers, and putting in place the full complement of Justices of the Supreme Court.

The President also disclosed that his administration “is also working on the construction of a permanent and befitting edifice for the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal.

“Furthermore, provisions are being made to provide conducive accommodation for federal judicial officers within the Federal Capital Territory. All these are part of measures to boost the independence, welfare, and capacity of the judiciary,” he added.

President Tinubu applauded the theme, “Pressing Forward: A National Posture for Rebuilding Nigeria,” chosen by the NBA for this year’s annual national conference, just as he commended the Association for always being part of “the vanguard for initiating and driving reforms to stimulate economic growth and development”.

On her part, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said efforts must be made towards accelerating growth and development, as Nigeria has all it takes to succeed.

In her keynote address titled, “A Social Contract for Nigeria’s Future,” the former Nigerian Finance Minister as well as the first woman and first African to lead the WTO regretted that Nigeria is not progressing as much as it should in its over 60 years of existence.

“Strong macro economic reforms is something we need in Nigeria. Oil has dominated Nigerian exports but we must diversify to agricultural and solid minerals exports,” she added.

Lamenting the lack of policy consistency which, according to her, has also affected the growth of the nation, the WTO DG said that to minimize the volatility of inconsistent policies, Nigeria needs a social contract, stressing that achieving a social contract involves the security of lives and national assets.

She said an organization like the NBA has a role in achieving a social contract.

“We need a new social contract to achieve growth in our country. My conviction on the need for a social contract is based on the need to tolerate different political parties and past administrations that preceded any administration in power,” Dr. Okonjo-Iweala noted.

For his part, the host Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, maintained that the security of lives and property was one of the cardinal things that the social contract was all about.

Urging the judiciary to strengthen the nation’s electoral process, he assured that Lagos, as a state, is ready to take on the social contract, even as he said for five years, he has not taken a kobo from the local government treasury.

“And we have demonstrated that even in the legal profession that all of you are part of we have more women in our judiciary consistently than any other part of the country and we kept faith in that,” Sanwo-Olu added.

Earlier in his welcome address, President of the NBA, Mr. Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), assured that the bar will continue to work for the course of justice in Nigeria, adding that the respect the bar has is a symbol of freedom in the county.

“The bar is represented primarily by the need to serve justice to the people. Our existence as a people is intricately connected to our responsibility as the defenders of the people,” he said.

Mr. Maikyau urged lawyers to ensure that they discharged their duties to the people of Nigeria with determination like the resilience of an eagle and eschew corruption at all levels.

The occasion also featured the launch of a book titled, “History of the Nigerian Bar Association,” written by a Nigerian lawyer, Olanrewaju Akinsola.

Other dignitaries present at the event included Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang; former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama; Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN); President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (the Ọjájá II), and representatives of the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives, among others.

We are going to make sure Okpebholo is elected governor – Edo elders

Edo elders on Tuesday outlined some of the key priorities of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

‘’We need a governor who cares about public education, health and environment. We need a governor who cares about women, youths and elderly. Senator Monday Okpebholo understands Edo voters’ economic struggles and will work every day to make our state a better place to live. We are going to make sure that he is elected governor. We shall make the APC governorship candidate to succeed. This is the project of Edo people. God willing, we shall succeed”.

They also described Okpebholo as the soul of a new Edo State.

‘’Senator Monday Okpebholo has vowed to serve the good people of Edo State faithfully and diligently. Thus, a vote for APC is a vote for transparency, accountability, due process, prudent management of scarce resources and development’’

The elders in a statement shortly after meeting in Benin City urged the electorate to reject political extremism, unremarkable politicians, brutal dictatorship and administrative incompetence.

“Senator Monday Okpebholo’s vision is virtually limitless. He will build structures for real, concrete development, translate our hopes to viable reality, fight for honest, transparent government, protect the interest of Edo people, build the infrastructure base of the state, appoint people from the three senatorial zones into key positions, create an enabling environment for businesses to flourish without official policy impediments and protect the wealth of the people in all parts of the state”

The statement issued by the Chairman of Edo Elders Forum (EEF), Chief Efua Abudu accused the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of failing to improve the state.

‘’Edo State needs a visionary leader, who can think out of the box, come up with solutions that will address the paucity of development in the state. Senator Monday Okpebholo has what it takes in terms of exposure, education and vision to take Edo State to the next level of development’’

Okpebholo joined the gubernatorial race to bring in the much-needed investment to develop the state, harness the huge resources, shore up revenue and fill the gap in infrastructure. He is favored to defeat Ighodalo and Akpata.

‘’Senator Monday Okpebholo is committed to building a state where there would be economic buoyancy, a hub of modern development and beehive of business investments and employment generation activities. He will create new jobs, ensure proper training and enabling environment for the civil servants in the state, lead an all-inclusive government, bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, provide developmental initiatives and encourage women by reserving forty percent of appointment for them’’

PDP Hails Supreme Court Judgement Affirming Governor Diri’s Election

August 23, 2024

Press Statement

{“capture_mode”:”AutoModule”,”faces”:[]}
… Raises Concerns Over Imo, Kogi States

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) congratulates the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri over the judgement of the Supreme Court, which today affirmed his victory in the November 11, 2023 governorship election in the State.

The verdict of the Supreme Court is another victory for Democracy, Rule of Law and the expressed Will of the people of Bayelsa State in their quest for good governance and development on the platform of the PDP.

Governor Diri’s re-election by the overwhelming majority of the people of Bayelsa State is a resounding testament in recognition and appreciation of his outstanding achievements in the delivery of life-changing citizen empowerment programmes and projects in the State.

The PDP however raises serious concerns on the decision of the Supreme Court to uphold the governorship elections in Imo and Kogi States despite confirmed reports and evidence that the elections were heavily flawed and blatantly compromised, marred by widespread violence and manipulations by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in connivance with certain unscrupulous officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The general melancholic disposition in Imo and Kogi States at the news of the judgment validates the concerns and views of our Party and majority of Nigerians that the results of the elections declared in the two States did not reflect the true aspiration of the people as expressed in their votes.

The upholding of the governorship election in Imo and Kogi States further underscores a very serious challenge created by the blemished operation and violation of the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022 and Electoral Guidelines by INEC.

The judgement also underlines the clamour and demand by our Party and Nigerians for a comprehensive review of the Electoral Law particularly with respect to the declaration of results of election without due regard to issues and complaints arising from obvious violation of the provisions of the law and electoral processes.

This again highlights the need to strengthen the electoral law and processes to ensure that elections are determined by votes cast and not by violence and manipulations as were prevalent in the Imo and Kogi State governorship elections.

Such situation places a lot of pressure on the judiciary which would have been avoided if the Electoral Commission ensured strict adherence to the Electoral Act and Guidelines in the conduct of elections in our country.

Our Party restates its position that no candidate should be declared a winner of any election until all legal processes are concluded. This is to prevent the inclination to resort to self-help through the use of violence and manipulation to secure unearned victory as witnessed in the Imo and Kogi States governorship elections.

The PDP as a law-abiding Party, respects the decision of the Supreme Court despite our Party’s deep reservations and urges Nigerians to remain calm but determined in the collective quest to ensure the entrenchment of credible elections in our country.

Hon. Debo Ologunagba

COMMUNIQUE

The PDP Governors’ Forum today, Friday, August 23,2024, held its regular monthly meeting in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital and issued the following communique’;

  1. The Meeting deliberated on crucial intra-party and governance matters affecting our states as well as those of overriding national interest and importance.
  2. The Governors noted with a sigh of relief the end of the #EndBadGovernance protests which was edging to a major national crisis. We salute the dexterity of the Governors especially of the PDP extraction in handling the situation in their respective States with maturity, thereby restraining hoodlums and other unscrupulous elements from hijacking the protests.
  3. The Forum reiterates that peaceful protests are the inalienable rights of the citizens through which they vent their genuine grievances. The Forum commiserates with the families of those innocent souls that were lost and calls on the Federal Government to ensure fair and speedy trial of those who were arrested.
  4. The Forum laments that rather than undertake a review of macro-economic and social policies with a view to giving them a human face, the Federal Government has resorted to blackmail. We call on Mr. President to show statesmanship by restraining his officials from blame games, that make the sub-nationals look bad by mentioning piecemeal interventions that cannot solve the problem. We remain unshaken in our firm resolve to stand with the suffering Nigerian masses and to take all legitimate steps to ameliorate their plight.
  5. The Forum notes the political impasse in Rivers State where court judgements are employed to determine the outcome of the party congresses. The PDP Governors’ Forum restates its stand with the Governor of Rivers State and will engage the NWC of our great party to revisit the congress with a view to correcting the anomaly and allowing His Excellency Governor Siminalayi Fubara to take his rightful leadership position of the party in the state,
  6. With regard to the forth coming governorship election in Edo State, we condemn the pronouncements by the President to compromise the election in favour of his Party as well as the systematic intimidation of PDP supporters by the Nigeria Police and call on the Inspector General of Police to call his men to order.
  7. The Forum notes with concern, the refusal of the Federal Government to distinguish between the Federal Government of Nigeria, FGN revenue and revenue accruing to the Federation which must be allocated in accordance with extant laws. We call on the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Accountant General of the Federation to be more transparent in obeying the law, particularly section 162 (1) (2) (3). And equally call on the Accountant General of the Federation to stop behaving like the Accountant General of the Federal Government and to exercise her role in line with constitution. Therefore, we call for the separation of the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation and that of the Accountant General of the FGN.
  8. Finally, the Forum commends the host, the Taraba State Government, under Governor Agbu Kefas, for the hospitality accorded members of the Forum and the Secretariat and noted with delight the giant steps taken to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of the state; which is in line with the governance philosophy of the PDP.

His Excellency Sen. Bala Mohammed.

Governor of Bauchi State.

Chairman PDP Governor’s Forum.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU SWEARS IN JUSTICE KEKERE-EKUN AS ACTING CHIEF JUSTICE OF NIGERIA, SAYS INDEPENDENCE OF JUDICIARY CRITICAL FOR PRESERVING SOCIAL ORDER, PEACE AND SECURITY

President Bola Tinubu on Friday administered oath of office on Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), pending her confirmation by the Senate.

The swearing-in of the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria and the second female justice to hold the office took place at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.

In his remarks, President Tinubu urged the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria to defend the independence of the judiciary and promote the cause of justice.

The President emphasized the importance of strengthening mechanisms that will uphold and enhance integrity, discipline, and transparency in the judiciary.

”Undoubtedly, the position of the Chief Justice of Nigeria comes with enormous responsibilities as the head of all judicial institutions in the country. It is a position of considerable influence that demands temperance and sobriety.

”The occupant of the office must exude the highest level of integrity in the discharge of their duties. This is more so because of the finality of the Supreme Court’s judgments.

”I, therefore, urge your Lordship to be faithful and loyal to the Constitution when discharging your duty as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

”I also encourage you to defend the judiciary’s independence and always promote the cause of justice. It is vital that you strengthen all mechanisms for integrity, discipline, and transparency in the judicial sector, and pursue other reforms or initiatives to sustain and build public confidence in the judiciary,” the President stated.

President Tinubu also lauded the contributions of Justice Kekere-Ekun to the judiciary, noting that she is coming to the position with an admirable family and professional pedigree.

”Over the years, she has established a respectable and incorruptible reputation within the bar and the bench, which asserts the cause of justice.

”Her meritorious rise from a magistrate to justice of the Supreme Court is a testament to her exceptional talent, hard work, unblemished record, strong work ethic, and dedication to her calling as a priest in the temple of justice.

”Her sterling contribution to the growth of the Nigerian judiciary has been remarkable. We are inspired by her unwavering commitment to a higher ideal of upholding the principles of fairness and a strong commitment to humanity.

”Justice Kekere-Ekun is a brilliant lawyer who was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981. She’s now a trailblazer becoming the second woman to hold this esteemed position after Honourable Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, GCON,” the President said.

President Tinubu noted that the appointment of the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria is an inspiration and a beacon of hope to young women who aspire to break glass ceilings across sectors and seek to make meaningful impact on society.

Reflecting on the roles and evolution of the Nigerian Supreme Court since it was empowered by the 1963 Constitution to take over from the then Judicial Committee of the Privy Council as the highest court, the President noted that the court has played a critical role in resolving complex legal conflicts, even under the military.

He acknowledged the role of the Supreme Court in shaping public policies that impact all segments of society, citing the recent interpretation of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) regarding the financial autonomy of local councils in Nigeria.

Highlighting the expedited passage of the Judicial Autonomy Act of 2024, which increased the remuneration of judicial officers by 300 percent, President Tinubu assured the judiciary of continued support from his administration in the expeditious improvement of its welfare and capacity.

He cited the appointment of 11 new justices of the Supreme Court in December 2023, which is enabling the court to work efficiently as it attained its full complement of 21 justices for the first time in decades.

”Let me also reassure you that the judiciary under this administration will continue to receive prompt and adequate attention, recognizing its status as a driver of social order, rule of law, peace, security and economic development,” the President said.

President Tinubu also expressed gratitude to the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, commending him for his 32 years of service to the judiciary and the nation.

Speaking to the media after the swearing-in, the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria pledged to elevate the judiciary to new heights, improve its reputation, and sustain public confidence in the judicial system.

”We will make sure that people have more confidence in the judiciary, and I believe that it is not a one-man job. We all have to be on board because we all see the areas that are in need of improvement.

”I believe that there will be maximum cooperation because we all want to see a better judiciary.

”A better judiciary is for the benefit of the entire nation. Whatever the shortcomings that we see today are, we are all members of the society so, if we want to see a better society, if we want to see improvement, let the improvement start with each and every one of us and our approach to justice.

”Let us all have faith in the system and then also be particular about the process of appointment, I know it is a source of a lot of concern; the issue of discipline on the bench and at the bar as well.

”All of these things are aspects that we will look into and I believe that by the grace of God, at the end of my tenure, we should be able to have a judiciary that we will all be proud of,” the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria said.

The event was witnessed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio; the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola; former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed; justices of the Supreme Court, senior judicial officers, and some members of the Federal Executive Council.

The family of the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, led by her spouse, Mr. Akin Kekere-Ekun was also present at the State House Council Chamber.

As part of measures to ensure the welfare of the judiciary, the federal budgetary allocation to the institution was increased by 100 percent during President Tinubu’s first year in office.

LAGOS FLOATS SUSTAINABILITY SUMMIT TO CHAMPION CITY’S RESILIENCE

  • ‘This effort will shape the future of our State’ — Finnih

  • Summit holds September

Lagos State Government has floated a new initiative that will advance its vision to create a resilient and sustainable approach towards realisation of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Office of Sustainable Development Goals (OSDG), on Thursday, launched Lagos Sustainability Summit — a yearly multidisciplinary forum designed to advance strategies and create actionable pathways to build a more equitable, inclusive and prosperous Lagos.

The Summit, coming up in the second week of September at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, is being organised in collaboration with Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC) and Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA).

The event with the theme: “Building a Resilient and Sustainable Lagos”, will host a diverse range of stakeholders, including governmental bodies, private sector leaders, civil society organisations, and international partners, to share ideas, generate fresh insights and collaborate on innovative solutions to address critical sustainability challenges.

The summit is expected to chart a course for Lagos to emerge as a model for sustainable urban development anchored on social equity, economic prosperity and environmental stewardship.

Addressing journalists at a pre-event conference held Thursday, at Radisson Hotel in Ikeja, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sustainable Development Goals, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, said the summit would bring fresh impetus to the State Government’s drive to strategically reposition Lagos towards advancing its vision of becoming a resilient and sustainable city.

Through the initiative, she said the Office of the Sustainable Development Goals would be championing ethical business practices that must have positive social impact, stressing that any effort aimed at achieving economic growth in the State must go hand in hand with moral and social responsibilities.

Finnih said the Lagos Sustainability Summit would serve as a call to action and a roadmap guiding the State Government’s efforts to forge a prosperous, equitable and environmentally sustainable city where citizens would have the opportunity to succeed.

She said: “As we stand at the forefront of a transformative journey, Lagos is launching a Sustainability Summit that stands as a testament to our collective resolve. The summit will focus on key areas that will demonstrate the Government’s commitment to sustainability, showcasing strategic initiatives and policies that reflect our dedication to sustainable development. Through the event, we will be fostering social cohesion by ensuring equitable participation of communities in sustainability efforts.

“We will be promoting ethical business practices that will enable positive social impacts, fair labour standards and community engagement initiatives that drive positive social impacts. The summit will enhance sustainable finance, while encouraging investments in projects that support the SDGs and integrate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria into financial decision-making. We seek to build resilient networks that support responsible waste management and local sourcing. and ethical labor practices.”

Finnih said human communities, more than ever, stood at crossroads, given the shift in global dynamics, impacts of climate change and technological advancement. This, she pointed out, had been making cities devising innovative ways to make their communities thrive in emerging competitive environments.

The Special Adviser said Lagos was faced with the choice to rise to the occasion in order not to be overwhelmed by global changes, creating a platform for innovation, adaptation and actions.

“The summit is not just about dialogues but about taking decisive actions that will shape the future of our city. This effort is not just for us, but for the children who will inherit this city and who will look to us, not just as leaders, but as guardians of their future. We would be worthy of their trust if we build a Lagos that is resilient, sustainable and above all, a city that is filled with hope,” Finnih said.

LASEPA General Manager, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, said the initiative was not only intended to enhance sustainable business practices, but also to champion protection of the environment for the wellbeing of the city’s inhabitants.

Ajayi said the future generations would be proud of the efforts being taken by the State Government to bequeath a sustainable city to them.

LSSC Director General, Mr. Lanre Mojola, said part of the State’s urbanisation vision was to build a city with robust occupational safety and health standards, noting that the summit would be a major step towards making Lagos a safe city.

Greenville LNG Projects: Fanfare in Lafia as Greenville LNG Delivers, Commissions the first LNG/CNG Hub Station in Nasarawa State.

…Governor Abdullahi A. Sule lauds Greenville LNG for constructing its Gas Hub station as scheduled, and for setting the pace for cost-cutting CNG and LNG Delivery in Nasarawa State

It was with a great sense of accomplishment that Greenville LNG Co Ltd, inaugurated its Lafia L-CNG station to offer energy cost-reducing LNG and CNG fuelling options to the public. The Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, His Excellency Engr.  Abdullahi A. Sule, was the Special Guest of Honor who in person commissioned the completed project in shabu, Lafia on Tuesday 20, 2024.

In his address to the gathering at the Gas Station inauguration in Lafia, Governor Abdullahi A. Sule spoke of the Nasarawa Gas Masterplan and lauded Greenville LNG for successfully completing the project within its promised and planned 1-year schedule. The Governor also commended and thanked the company for taking the lead in the visionary Nasarawa gas utilization agenda, urging the company to further spread its business operations beyond the state capital to across the state.

Governor Abdullahi Sule informed the audience in Lafia that in furtherance of the gasification policy of the Nasarawa State Government in order to reduce and sustainably manage energy costs in the State, his administration, as an initial investment, is sponsoring 50 youths to be trained as technicians for conversion of automotive vehicles to CNG-powered engines. He further called on local investors within Nasarawa State to align with Greenville LNG and invest in related businesses and projects across the length and breath of the State.

The Governor who did a quantification analysis between the volume of currently documented crude oil reserves and gas reserves in the country, said that with the gas reserves in Nigeria conservatively estimated at 220 trillion cubic litres, Nigeria is more of a Gas State than a Crude Oil State. Governor Sule also spoke of the great potentials of Nasarawa State as an oil and Gas State, and highlighted his dream of Nasarawa gas fields becoming gas farms which he envisions will eventually feed the gas requirements of companies such as Greenville LNG in the State in the near future.

Alhaji Zubairu Ibrahim Bayi, the Director, Inter-governmental Relations of Greenville LNG Company Limited, represented and delivered the goodwill message of the company’s Chairman Mr. Eddy Van den Broeke who, for reasons beyond his control, was unavoidably absent at the ceremony in Lafia. Alhaji Bayi, on behalf of the Chairman, Board of Directors and staff of Greenville LNG expressed sincere congratulations to the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule in particular, and to the State Government and people of Nasarawa State in general on the epoch-making commissioning of the L-CNG hub station in Lafia, the first of its kind in the State, and under the Governor’s very focused, innovative productive and developmentalist leadership. “The conceptualisation, construction, completion and subsequent commissioning of this project is a clear testimony of Your Excellency’s unwavering resolve to provide and improve lasting developmental infrastructure which positively impact citizens’ lives across the length and breadth of this State and indeed the country in general,” said Bayi to the Governor. Bayi recalled that the history of the Greenville’s LNG-CNG Station Project in Lafia, dates back to when the Governor graciously granted Greenville LNG ample land to construct the Hub Station with a record approval time that clearly exemplified the helpful leadership trajectory of Governor Abdullahi A. Sule. Bayi said “…it is with worthy pride that we announce to the general public today that within our well-meant commitment to the Nasarawa State Government and the public, Greenville LNG has kept faith and delivered the first LNG-CNG Station in the State within the promised and planned period of one year.” Alhaji Bayi further informed the gathering that the Greenville LNG Lafia Gas station, at full operation, will be providing CNG dispensing capacity of 32 Tons per Day; and 220 Tons of LNG per day. He explained the multi-dimensional benefits and advantages to include cost-effective energy solutions, promotion of sustainable business that fosters economic growth and planned development, and creation of desirable green climate, the latter of which “…will stand out Nasarawa State as one of the leaders in green energy compliance in the country, positioning the State in a prime position for access to funding reserved for green-compliant entities.”

Pertaining to its local job creation potential and promotion of local businesses, Bayi said the establishment of the Greenville LNG and CNG Hub Station and its expected and related Daughter stations development across Nasarawa State, will positively generate considerable employment opportunities across various sectors such as transportation, industrial concerns, small and medium enterprises; practically contributing to reduction of unemployment across the State. Bayi also highlighted that the use of CNG and LNG in Nasarawa State will create a beneficial energy diversification and security for the State’s industrialisation agenda, including development of commercially prudent independent power plants, reducing its reliance on traditional fuels while creating a more resilient and sustainable energy landscape. “Your Excellency, this initiative of Greenville LNG in Nasarawa State is in synch with the strategy of the Government of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Presidential Initiative on CNG (Pi-CNG) to provide clean, safer, and more affordable gas as a source of fuel for every corner of the country….With the Greenville L-CNG Station now fully operational in Lafia, residents, transportation companies and industries in the State in particular and, the Middle Belt region in general can now fully harness full energy cost-cutting benefits of the Presidential Initiative on Gas,” he said. Bayi expressed Greenville’s profound thanks and appreciation to the Nasarawa State Government and to all its agencies and particularly to His Excellency, Governor Abdullahi A. Sule for all the support received by the company for the actualization of the project. He thanked the Governor and distinguished guests for sparing clearly valuable time to be present with Greenville LNG at the ceremony in Lafia, adding “Greenville LNG is indeed grateful. On behalf of our Chairman, Board of Directors and entire staff, I sincerely thank everyone for coming and wish all of you a safe return journey back to your various destinations.”

Besides the Governor of Nasarawa State, other important VIPs and dignitaries at the ceremony in Lafia included  the Director of Gas at the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Oluremi Komolafe who represented the Hon. Min. of Petroleum Resources (Gas), Members of Nasarawa State Exco, Principal Officers and Honourable members of Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Chairman of the Nasarawa State Traditional Council and Emir of Lafia, HRH Justice Sidi Bage, Sangari Shabu HRH Alhaji Mahmud Baula, Sangari Kwandere HRH Ahmadu Almakura, Mr Jide Awolowo who represented the Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Gas, the Managing Director of Nasarawa State Investment and Development Agency (NASIDA), Barrister Abdullahi Ibrahim and other senior officials of NASIDA, the Managing Director of the Gas Aggregation Council of Nigeria (GACN) Chijioke Uzoho, representatives of NMDPRA’s Executive Directors of Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF), Economic Regulations and Strategic Planning, HPPITI, and DSSRI. Greenville LNG is Nigeria’s private sector’s leading producer and distributor of LNG and CNG for the domestic market. With the company’s efficient virtual pipeline consisting of more than 700 specialized LNG-powered gas delivery trucks capable of driving about 1,200 kilometres and 1,800 kilometres without the need to refuel. Grenville LNG from its Rumuji Gas Plant in Rivers State and from its active Gas hubs, delivers sustainable and more affordable LNG and CNG energy supplies to every part of Nigeria. With Gas Hub stations in Rumuji, Benin, Shagamu, Koton-Karfe, Kaduna and now Lafia, Greenville is working progressively to open 25 Hubs to enable the delivery of cleaner, more cost-efficient and more readily available LNG and CNG fuels for homes, the automotive industry and other industrial concerns, and for independent power plants outside the national power grid across the geo-spatial and economic spectrum of country. It would be recalled that Greenville LNG, in a double historic energy transition novelty, successfully fuelled for the first time Nigerian Railway Corporation Locomotive engines with Liquefied Natural Gas at the Idu Abuja Railway Station to ply the Abuja-Kaduna railway line recently, and at about the same time in Lagos, Greenville also pioneered the fuelling with LNG Ekeson Transport’s  buses at the terminal of the Ekeson transport company.

PRESIDENT TINUBU LAUNCHES HEALTHCARE INITIATIVES; TO ESTABLISH TEN ONCOLOGY AND DIAGNOSTIC FACILITIES — AND RETRAIN 120,000 HEALTH WORKERS

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

To improve the health and social well-being of Nigerians, drive economic development, and position Nigeria as a healthcare hub within Africa, President Bola Tinubu has launched the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA)-Healthcare Expansion Programme and the retraining of 120,000 frontline health workers.

The first initiative — the Healthcare Expansion Programme — is a major milestone in the health sector as ten world-class healthcare facilities specializing in oncology and diagnostics will be established across the nation’s six geopolitical zones.

This expansion builds upon the success of the NSIA’s previous projects, including the NSIA-Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Cancer Centre, the NSIA-Kano Diagnostic Centre, and the NSIA-Umuahia Diagnostic Centre.

Speaking at the launch of the initiatives on Friday in Bauchi State, President Tinubu, who was represented by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, said the new projects will complement the ongoing expansion of cancer infrastructure and equipment in six federal teaching hospitals.

The President stated that beyond providing essential healthcare to Nigerians, these facilities will reverse the trend of outbound medical tourism.

The President also said upon completion of the first phase, the NSIA, through its subsidiary, Medserve, will operate the largest chain of oncology and diagnostic centres in West Africa, with the capacity to train up to 500 clinicians over three years, in addition to enhancing clinical trial and research capabilities.

“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, and the NSIA for their vision, innovation, and dedication to making this programme a reality. Through inter-sectoral partnerships like these, we can achieve significant healthcare and economic outcomes.

“This programme will serve as a blueprint for future healthcare infrastructure projects, propelling us towards our national healthcare goals: saving lives, reducing suffering, and ensuring health for all Nigerians.

“The second initiative, the launch of the retraining of 120,000 frontline health workers, is a personal performance indicator for me as the African Union (AU) Champion for Human Resources for Health and Community Health Delivery Partnership. We all know that health workers and other professionals are the backbone of our healthcare system.

“By equipping them with the latest skills and knowledge, we ensure they are well-prepared to meet the evolving healthcare needs of our population,” President Tinubu said.

Underscoring the viability of the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII), the President affirmed that the nation’s productivity and wealth depend on the vitality of its people, and that basic healthcare is a fundamental human right, as well as a matter of long-term national security.

“The NHSRII has provided strategic direction for our health investments, focusing on critical areas such as maternal and child health, disease prevention, and health system strengthening. The Compact with State Governors and Development Partners, being deployed as the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp), has been crucial in advancing our health sector. These frameworks have fostered collaboration, alignment, and accountability, ensuring our collective efforts are harmonized towards achieving our health goals.

“I am proud of the remarkable progress we are making, particularly in unlocking healthcare value chains, restructuring the Basic Health Care Provision Fund to expand access to primary health care by all Nigerians, expanding health insurance, and enhancing health human resources. By making universal health coverage a priority at all levels, this administration aims to foster a vibrant workforce and drive greater economic and social development for the Nigerian people,” President Tinubu stated.

The President emphasized that his administration will continue to prioritize healthcare, enhance preventive measures, and invest in health education while fostering health equity and justice.

During a brief ceremony, where the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare was turbaned as the ‘Mainasara of Bauchi Emirate’, the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, thanked the President for his landmark investments in the health sector.

“We thank Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the giant strides he is making in the health sector. Even those of us in the opposition party, we are federalists and appreciate the work and collaboration with Mr. President’s team here, with both the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Health, to kick off this impactful project for all Nigerians,” the Governor said.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU DIRECTS THAT ONLY AUTHORIZED OFFICIALS WITH BUSINESS AT UNGA SHOULD ATTEND

President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive to reduce the size of Nigeria’s official delegation to the forthcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meetings in New York, United States.

This directive was disclosed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, on Saturday in Abuja during a one-day retreat organised by the State House management for heads of government agencies under its supervision.

Addressing participants at the retreat, the Chief of Staff said the decision to streamline Nigeria’s delegation to the 79th session of UNGA in September is part of the administration’s commitment to ensure prudent management of resources and reduce the cost of governance.

Highlighting the need for the State House and agencies under its supervision to ensure that its functions are guided by statutes, regulations, policy decisions, and presidential directives, Honourable Gbajabiamila hinted at upcoming policy announcements aimed at ensuring efficient service delivery in government operations.

”I just discussed with the President this afternoon. In the next few weeks, we are going to see a test of this policy during UNGA in New York.

”During recent protests, there were talks about reduction in cost of governance. Everyone is waiting to see if Nigeria, as in the past, will send the ‘largest delegation’ to UNGA.

”From experience, we know that some individuals use the opportunity of such international meetings to go about their personal businesses.

”I have received a directive from Mr.  President that this time, we will be strict. If you have no business at the UN General Assembly, do not step foot in America, and this is a directive from Mr. President,” he said.

The Chief of Staff urged heads of agencies at the retreat to comply strictly, adding that the President is listening to the concerns of Nigerians and is committed to addressing them diligently.

On the retreat, Honourable Gbajabiamila noted that it will facilitate collaboration and coordination among government agencies, particularly those under the direct supervision of the State House.

”The idea is to ensure coherence as we jointly work together to achieve the objectives of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

”Coordination is not just a choice but a necessity for the government to succeed and for us to meet the expectations of the Nigerian people,” he said.

He said the retreat would be a continuous exercise, as governance is an evolving process that requires regular adjustments.

The Chief of Staff also urged the State House management and chief executives of agencies under its supervision to lead by example by ensuring compliance with statutes, laws, regulations, and various policies designed to enhance governance.

”We must demonstrate excellence in our compliance with the Public Procurement Act, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria Act, the Finance Act, and various appropriation acts in operation.

”Compliance with the civil service rules and the scheme of service guidelines, especially regarding recruitment, promotion and presidential approvals is also non-negotiable,” Honourable Gbajabiamila said.

The theme of the one-day retreat was ‘Strengthening Institutional Mechanism for Effective Delivery.’

N21m jumbo pay: Account for NASS ‘running costs’ or face legal action, SERAP tells Akpabio, Abbas

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas to “promptly disclose the exact amount of the monthly running costs of millions of naira currently being paid to and received by members of the National Assembly and the spending details of any such running costs.”

SERAP also urged them to “promptly end the alleged practice by the National Assembly of fixing its own salaries, allowances and running costs, in conformity with the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended], and the country’s international obligations.”

SERAP urged them “to end the alleged practice of paying running costs into the personal accounts of lawmakers, and to refer the alleged misuse or mismanagement of the running costs to appropriate anticorruption agencies for investigation and prosecution where there is relevant admissible evidence.”

SERAP urged them to “promptly disclose the total amount of running costs that have so far been paid to and received by the lawmakers and to ensure the return of any misused or mismanaged public funds.”

In the letter dated 17 August 2024 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said: “We are concerned about the practice by  the lawmakers of fixing their salaries, allowances and running costs, and the opacity and in the spending of millions of naira in running costs by lawmakers.”

SERAP said, “The constitutional oath of office of lawmakers require them to ensure transparency and accountability in the exact amounts of salaries, allowances and running costs they receive.”

The letter, read in part: “The provisions of paragraph N, section 32(d) of the Third Schedule to the Nigerian Constitution clearly make it unlawful for the National Assembly to fix its own salaries, allowances and running costs.”

“The allegations that members of the National Assembly are fixing their own salaries, allowances and running costs are entirely inconsistent and incompatible with the constitutional oath of office and the object and purpose of the UN Convention against Corruption to which Nigeria is a state party.”

“We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within seven days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall take all appropriate legal actions to compel you and other members of the National Assembly to comply with our request in the public interest.”

“Accounting for and returning any misused or mismanaged running costs collected by members of the National Assembly would build trust in democratic institutions and strengthen the rule of law.”

“Accounting for and returning any misused or mismanaged running costs collected would also enhance the ability of the lawmakers to effectively and efficiently discharge their constitutional and statutory responsibilities.”

“The country’s international legal obligations especially under the UN Convention against Corruption impose a legal commitment on public officials including lawmakers to discharge a public duty truthfully and faithfully.”

“The convention specifically in paragraph 1 of article 8 requires members to promote integrity, honesty and responsibility in the management of public resources.”

“Nigerians have a right to scrutinize how their lawmakers spend their tax money and the commonwealth. Nigerians also have a right to honest and faithful performance by their public officials including lawmakers.”

“The allegations also clearly amount to members taking advantage of their entrusted public positions. Ending the reported practice by lawmakers fixing their own salaries, allowances and running costs would improve public confidence in the integrity and honesty of the National Assembly.”

“It would show that the Senate and House of Representatives under your leadership can focus on serving the public interest of Nigerians rather than looking after themselves.”

“Constitutional oath of office requires public officials including lawmakers to abstain from all improper acts, such as fixing their own salaries, allowances and running costs, that are inconsistent with the public trust.”

“The National Assembly has a constitutional responsibility to combat abuse in its own spending if it is to effectively exercise its oversight functions and hold the government to account.”

“It is a travesty and a fundamental breach of their fiduciary duties for members of the National Assembly to fix their own salaries, allowances and running costs.”

“By exercising strong and effective leadership in this matter, the National Assembly can show Nigerians that the legislative body is a proper and accountable watchdog that represents and protects the public interest, and is able to hold itself to account in the management of public resources.”

“Rule 713 of the Federal Government Financial Regulations provides: ‘Personal money shall in no circumstances be paid into a government bank account, nor shall any public money be paid into a private bank account.’”

“In the Seventh Schedule to the Nigerian Constitution, members lawmakers commit to strive to ‘preserve the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy contained in the Constitution’, [and to] perform their ‘functions honestly, faithfully’, to act ‘always in the interest of the well-being and prosperity of Nigeria’.”

“Lawmakers also commit ‘preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of Nigeria; and abide by the Code of Conduct contained in the Fifth Schedule to the Constitution.’”

“‘Public function’ means activities in the public interest, not against it. The reports that lawmakers are fixing their own salaries, allowances and running costs amount to private self-interest or self-dealing. It is also detrimental to the public interest.”

“SERAP notes that Section 15(5) of the Nigerian Constitution requires public institutions to abolish all corrupt practices and abuse of power. Section 16(2) of the Nigerian Constitution further provides that, ‘the material resources of the nation are harnessed and distributed as best as possible to serve the common good.’”

“According to our information, members of the National Assembly are currently fixing their own salaries, allowances and running costs. The running costs are reportedly paid directly into the personal accounts of members.”

“Senator Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District, recently disclosed in an interview with BBC Hausa that each Nigerian senator earns at least N21 million monthly in running costs, salaries, and allowances.”

“Mr Sumaila reportedly said, ‘My monthly salary is less than N1 million. After deductions, the figure comes down to a little over N600,000. Given the increase effected, in the Senate, each senator gets N21 million every month as running cost.’”

“According to reports, former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently alleged that the lawmakers fix their own salaries and allowances, contrary to the recommendation of the Revenue Mobilisation Fiscal Allocation Commission (RMAFC).”

EDO YOUTHS COME OUT HARD AGAINST PDP, REAFFIRM SUPPORT FOR APC, OKPEBHOLO

·     LIST TERRIBLE CONDITION OF THE STATE, BETRAYAL, BOGUS CONTRACTS AS PDP KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

Edo youths on Sunday reaffirmed their unflinching support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

‘’Senator Monday Okpebholo remains an outstanding leader. He will improve the healthcare delivery system, allow the people to decide what types of programmes and policies to implement, channel more resources to poor communities, design appropriate institutional management and control mechanisms to ensure that funds are well spent and transform the state from its current state of economic distress to a more economically viable and prosperous state.

They also urged eligible voters in the state to reject the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) candidates in the September 11 governorship election.

‘’The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo will raise the standard of living of Edo people. His agenda is shaped with different goals in mind. First, he wants to protect the lives, property and rights of Edo people. Secondly, he wants to make the government more efficient and better, improve the state’s civil service and build railroads. Thirdly, he has interest in better education, youth development, industry and commerce’’

The highly intelligent and spirited men and women urged Edo people to make Okpebholo’s cause their own.

‘’Our long nightmare is over. Senator Monday Okpebholo is a man of principle, courage and an inspiration to the good people of Edo State. His words are sharp and emphatic. The other candidates lack dynamics, political skill, wisdom and experience’’.

In a statement issued by the Youth Alliance for Edo Unity and Progress (YAEUP) in Ekpoma, the youths approved Okpebholo/Idahosa ticket for the September 21, 2024 governorship election.

‘’What is needed at a time like this are men of honour and integrity who will promote peace, diligence, commitment and selfless service to the state’’

The statement titled Common Sense was signed by YAEUP Director of Mobilization, Dr. Matthew Agbonifo.

‘’Senator Monday Okpebholo will make life comfortable for the people of Edo State, appoint more youths and women to major posts, bring millions into the state’s social security system, provide funds for medical research, hospitals and urban renewal’’

The statement underscored Okpebholo’s ease of expression, gentlemanly nature and impeccable character.

The youths listed terrible condition of the state, widespread poverty, neglect of the economic wellbeing of the people, squandering the state’s meagre resources on bogus contracts and stunted growth as key achievements of the current PDP administration in the state.

‘’Senator Monday Okpebholo is more interested in improving the lot of Edo people. He will put in place a dynamic cabinet, contribute to the growth of an industrial economy, create millions of jobs, build roads, provide good housing for Edo people, help the urban and rural poor and make other internal improvements’’

Monday Okpebhoo will focus on education, health, security, food production, sports, roads rehabilitation and construction, tourism, salaries and pension

Group restates Okpebholo’s development plans

A group, Okpebholo Change Movement, has explained why the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has not chosen to run from pillar to post with his work plan for the development of Edo State.

‘’Edo requires a governor with sound vision, dedication and focus, one who will bring his ingenuity to bear in the management of the state’s economic potential and the natural endowments. In Edo State today, there is growing fervor for what Senator Monday Okpebholo stands for. More than ever before, the people of the state have come to recognize the fact that the APC candidate is a huge asset to them’’

The group noted that empty vessel makes the greatest noise.

‘’Monday Okpebholo did not come crashing into the political scene. He has cut the image of a well-focused, incisive and inspiring statesman. The APC governorship candidate knows the political terrain and will provide good leadership and turn the fortunes of Edo State around positively. ’’

The group in a statement on Monday in Benin said that if a ruling party had proved its worth before the Edo electorate, it doesn’t need to use foul language on opponents or run on empty manifesto before the people could renew the mandate of the party.

‘’It is becoming evident that the people of Edo State, including PDP and LP supporters, have made up their minds to support Senator Monday Okpebholo’’

The statement signed by the spokesperson of OKpebholo Change Movement, Dr. Francis Aghahowa   described the so-called PDP manifesto as mission in futility and rehearse of old tunes.

‘’In their campaigns, there is no fascination. Our people have made it clear that things must change, the status quo cannot continue, our state is in danger’’

The group expressed regrets about the way the resources in the state were allegedly being frittered away by the government.

‘’Senator Monday Okpebholo is a selfless, caring and compassionate person, who thinks of others first before himself. He will rebuild Edo State, put in place broad-based and inclusive government, pay adequate attention to interests that will assist in the overall development of the state and spread social and infrastructural amenities in Edo State. In making appointment, Okpebholo will take the entire geography of the state into consideration and give the people of Edo State the God intended confidence, economic empowerment and security’’

The group vowed to work with all determination, courage, commitment and due respect for the rule of law to ensure the candidate’s victory.

‘’We need to invest more in Okpebholo. We need to give him the chance to ensure effective and gainful farming, steady economic growth, boom in economic activities, the presence of genuine foreign investors and large industrial parks in the state’’

The statement listed education, health, security, food production, sports, roads rehabilitation and construction, tourism, salaries and pension as key areas of the next administration.

‘Senator Monday Okpebholo will encourage the people to invest and own shares in government-oriented projects and businesses’’
