Leaders of the Okpe Nation on Monday urged Okpe nationals not to be deterred by the recent events in Okpe Kingdom, but to ensure that the Okpe Union autonomy was protected.

 

 

 

‘’Being the umbrella membership ethnic organisation of the Okpe Nation which has played several historical roles in the making of the modern Okpe Nation (including the restoration of the Okpe monarchy in 1945), Okpe people cannot afford to allow it to be captured for selfish, personal or political purposes’’.

 

 

 

They also implored the Udogun Okpe to be alive to its historical and strategic role of stabilising traditional administration of the Okpe Nation.

 

 

 

‘’The Okpe people continue to recognise the unique status of the Udogun and its capacity to ensure that Okpe Kingdom is administered within the traditional doctrine of consultative, democratic, and limited monarchy as opposed to despotic systems inherited by some other kingdoms in Nigeria and the African continent. Indeed, Udogun Okpe is a chamber of sober reflections and not a rubber stamp of an Orodje as Okpe people expect her to play a pivotal role of checks and balances on the Orodje’s policies’’.

 

 

 

In a communiqué from an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Okpe Union held on 27th October, 2024, on the approach of the High Court, Orerokpe by a member of the Delta State Advisory and Peace Building Council, Okakuro Robert Onome to declare him as President General of the Okpe Union, the leaders urged Okakuro Robert Onome to withdraw his baseless and irrational suit at the Orerokpe High Court.

 

 

 

‘’The case is res judicata as it has already been decided by a court of competent jurisdiction. A court of coordinate jurisdiction cannot sit on appeal or entertain any facts different from the facts that were laid before the court that had given the judgement. For the sake of emphasis, in paragraph 17&18 of the Affidavit with which the Federal High Court, Lagos gave the Okpe Union Autonomy Judgement on the 19th of January 2023, it was clearly averred that Prof. Igho Natufe was the elected President General whose executive committee instituted the suit. Okakuro Robert Onome is a stranger to that case and can therefore not claim the benefit of a suit that he had battled against, along with the Illegal Interim executive committee. But in any case, the previous tenure which began in November 2016 (with a four-year tenure) was a collective one of the executive committee and not that of one man’’.

 

 

 

The leaders described the Orerokpe suit as the height of desperation.

 

 

 

‘’The Okpe Union National Executive Committee (NEC) is in possession of videos of his accompanying the nullified Illegal Interim executive committee in press conferences and also in possession of the audio recording of the 3rd of October 2020 event in which he abdicated office. For reasons of preserving the integrity of revered institutions, NEC has resolved not to let the latter one out. NEC shall recommend to the next General Assembly of the Okpe Union the expunging of the name of Okakuro Robert Onome from the list of former officials of the Okpe Union where he fails to accede to this advice’’.

 

 

 

The communiqué signed by Prof. Igho Natufe, President General, Okpe Union (Worldwide), Barrister Kingsley Ehensiri Akpederin, General Secretary, Okpe Union (Worldwide) and Mrs. Atarhe Abuh, National Publicity Secretary, Okpe Union (Worldwide) said it took over a year for the Palace of the Orodje and a group led by Okakuro Joseph Aboze to whom the Illegal Interim EXCO handed over, to finally accept to comply with the judgement of the Federal High Court.

 

 

 

‘’To further destabilize the Okpe Union, the same group of persons who orchestrated the previous destabilization of the Okpe Union have put together another plot with an approach to the State High Court, Orerokpe requesting the court to interpret the Federal High Court, Lagos Judgement for the Prof. Igho Natufe Executive Committee of the Okpe Union and declare former President General, Okakuro Robert Onome as President General’’.

 

 

 

The notable leaders vowed to work with all to make the Okpe Nation great.

 

 

 

‘’The current National leadership of the Okpe Union pledges to continue working with all to achieve so much more and make the Okpe Nation great again as it occupies its place of pride in the comity of Ethnic Nationalities in Delta State, Niger Delta and Nigeria’’.

 

 

 

In the suit filed by Okakuro Robert Onome (Suit No. HOR/M/2/2024), the Orerokpe High Court is being asked to interpret the Judgment of the Federal High Court which was delivered on the 19th of January 2023 in the suit filed by the Prof. Igho Natufe led National Executive Council of the Okpe Union in May 2022 (Suit No. FHC/L/CS/603/2022).

 

 

 

The judgement granted all the reliefs sought which include declaration that the purported dissolution of the elected National Executive Council of Okpe Union by HRM Orhue I, Orodje of Okpe was illegal and of no effect whatsoever, nullification of the Illegal Interim Executive Committee headed by Prof. Emrobome Idolor, and an order of perpetual injunction restraining the Imposed Interim, their privies and all those who derived authority from their actions from acting in any capacity in the Okpe Union.

 

 

 

On the 3rd of October, 2020, for reasons best known to HRM Orhue I, Orodje of Okpe, he invited some leaders of the Okpe Union (under the leadership of Okakuro Robert Onome) to the Orodje’s palace where he read out a declaration that he was dissolving the Executive Council of the Okpe Union and imposing his own Interim Executive Committee on the union and banning all members of the then executive committee from getting involved in any leadership position of the Okpe Union for two years.

 

 

 

Of the then membership of the National Executive Council of the Okpe Union, only Okakuro Robert Onome accepted the dissolution declaration by picking up the microphone and pledging his support for the Imposed Interim executive committee.

 

 

Having abdicated the office of President General, by the operation of the Okpe Union Constitution, the next in hierarchy, Mr. Patrick Akpotor assumed the office of Acting President General and led the EXCO to complete the tenure after the General Assembly (the highest decision making organ of the union, held on the 14th of November, 2020), set up an Electoral Committee that conducted elections which the Prof. Igho Natufe led EXCO became elected as the National Executive Council of the Okpe Union on the 15th of May, 2021.

 

 

 

 

 

As the Illegally imposed Interim Executive Committee were still parading themselves as the National leadership of the Okpe Union, in spite of several attempts by eminent Okpe nationals to mediate and recommend to the palace not to interfere with the administration of the Okpe Union, the elected National Executive Council led by Prof. Igho Natufe was left with no other options but to approach the Federal High Court, Lagos (suit No. FHC/L/CS/603/2022), in attempt to resolve the matter.

 

 

 

Meanwhile, Okakuro Robert Onome and some others teamed up with the Illegal Interim EXCO to approach the Corporate Affairs Commission to appoint a Board of Trustees for the Okpe Union as the previous trustees had all passed on. The legitimate NEC led by Prof. Igho Natufe had already commenced the process of regularising the affairs of the union with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) which included the process of appointing trustees with an application to the Federal High Court, Lagos. The Illegal Interim funded heavily by some Palace chiefs got ahead through the backdoor and surreptitiously procured a new Certificate of Registration with a Board of Trustees that included Okakuro Robert Onome. The elected NEC was however steadfast with the judicial redress believing that the wheel of justice grinds slowly but surely.

 

 

 

After nine months, the Federal High Court, Lagos gave judgment/victory to the elected Prof. Igho Natufe led NEC.

 

 

 

To ensure that the Board of Trustees and Certificate procured through the backdoor was not employed to further destabilize  the Okpe Union, the court validated Prof. Igho Natufe Executive Committee had to approach the Federal High Court, Abuja (which was earlier used by the Illegal Interim EXCO to legalise their backdoor Board of Trustees/Certificate) so that the same court would vacate the earlier empowering order and nullify the trustees and certificate.

 

 

 

On the 30th of April 2024, the Federal High Court, Abuja gave its Ruling (Suit No.FHC/ABJ/CS/395) and nullified the Board of Trustees/Certificate and ordered the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to expunge them (including Okakuro Robert Onome) from the records of the Okpe Union with CAC.

COMMUNIQUE FROM AN EMERGENCY MEETING OF THE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL OF THE OKPE UNION HELD ON 27TH OCTOBER, 2024, ON THE APPROACH OF THE HIGH COURT, OREROKPE, BY OKAKURO ROBERT ONOME TO DECLARE HIM AS PRESIDENT GENERAL OF THE OKPE UNION*

NEC desires to give a summary of the issues since the event of 3rd October, 2020 to date so that the Okpe public would be abreast with the developments from the onset and the undercurrents.

After reviewing the embarrassing developments since the unfortunate purported dissolution of 3rd October, 2020 till date and especially the attempt to further distabilise the Okpe Union with the Orerokpe High Court suit, the National Executive Council of the Okpe Union resolves as follows:

  1. NEC calls on all Okpe nationals to endeavor to be fully aware of the developments about the Okpe Union and do everything to protect its autonomy. Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi: One year score card

 

 

 

“Where there is no vision, there is no hope.” – George Washington Carver;

 

Carver a black American agricultural chemist, agronomist, experimenter and scientist invented more than 300 uses for the peanut. He made the above assertion when he alluded to the connectivity between vision and hope.

 

Like a twinkle of an eye, the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, in a matter of days will mark one year in office, having been appointed on October 23, 2023.

 

Industry watchers however have been amazed with his glaring milestones in the space of 365 days, judging from an experience of near-obscurity of the Commission’s creation over 4 decades ago.

 

 

 

THE CLARION CALL

 

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, made it abundantly clear when he coined the catchphrase for his campaign – Renewed Hope. The choice of ‘Renewed Hope’ as the campaign shibboleth or what is popularly referred to as ‘slogan’ was not an accident, but of a determined mind who was out to give hope to the hopeless, succour to the crestfallen, and relief to the forlornly downtrodden.

 

Mr. President was intentional about his vision for running for the numero uno seat. It is the more reason he asked that people should not pity him. He asked for the job. And like Theodore Hesburgh, a renowned American priest and academic once said, “The very essence of leadership is that you have to have a vision. It’s got to be a vision you articulate clearly and forcefully on every occasion. You can’t blow an uncertain trumpet.” President Tinubu is determined to rewrite the Nigerian story and put her on a trajectory of progressive hallmark and shared prosperity. This was why he sounded a note of warning to his minister-designates at the outset, and by extension, all his other appointees across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to throw in their letter of resignation if they knew they could not match his vision with measurable milestones in their various offices.

 

This further implies every appointee who desires on-the-job accolades must not only be seen acting the Renewed Hope mandate in their various areas of responsibilities, but must truly activate steps and mechanisms that will contribute to the overall goal congruence of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) – which is to retool Nigeria in all facets for the good of all Nigerians irrespective of tribe, ethnic bias, religion and/or tongue.

 

This is in line with the promise of Mr. President during the campaigns. And a clarion calls for Dr. Abdullahi which has hitherto lived up to expectations.

 

  1. ABDULLAHI AS A VISIONARY

 

On resumption of office and in line with Mr. President’s mindset, the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi did not mince words when he averred, in line with the vision and mission of the Commission that;  “Under my stewardship and with the support of our dedicated staff and stakeholders, the ECN as the Lead Agency in the country’s push for energy transition will set the tone for economic development based on progressive innovation and policy initiatives as envisioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.”

 

From his position, it is crystal clear that as the new honcho in charge of the country’s lead agency on energy wherewithal, he is in the Commission with a clear agenda as to give new direction on the energy economy.

 

He is poised to drive the country’s energy economy from a vista of excellence, industry, results and dedication to national growth and development.

 

To achieve his set objectives therefore, he rolled out a 5-point agenda from the day he assumed office as the numero uno of the Commission.

 

These are what his blueprint revolves around and will include;

 

  • Integration of the Renewable and Alternative Energy Policy Structure into the Mainstream National Energy Architecture.

 

  • Immediate facilitation of the actualisation of the Energy Transition Plan

 

  • Facilitation of Research and Development Funding and Partnership Initiatives in the Energy Sector.

 

  • Review of extant Energy Policies, Initiatives and Frameworks to stimulate economic development.

 

  • Facilitation of improved welfare consideration for staff of the Commission commensurate with standards in the Energy Sector.

 

  1. ABDULLAHI AS A BRAND AMBASSADOR

 

Until in recent months, not many Nigerians were aware of the existence of an agency  called the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN). Like a man with Midas touch, Dr. Abdullahi brought the Commission to global limelight when he engaged with the United States former Secretary of State, John Kerry and other world leaders at the #COP28UAE where he highlighted his leadership efforts in the area of energy  transition.

 

This one huge notable footprint will remain indelible in the annals of the Energy Commission of Nigeria’s (ECN) history.

 

The image like never before that the Commission currently enjoys, not only in the country, but also across the globe. Dr. Abdullahi’s efforts at bringing the Commission out of near-obscurity to global prominence is highly commendable.

 

Aside his outstanding performance at the annual global event, #COP28UAE, Dr. Abdulahi had represented the country in other international events including the G20 Energy Summit in Brasilia, Brazil where he spoke on behalf of Africa, emphasising energy transitions and net-zero emissions, and in Cape Town, South Africa where he presented a paper at the Africa Energy Indaba Summit alongside other global energy experts.

 

  1. ABDULLAHI AS A MOVING ENERGISER

 

If there exists anything Dr. Abdullahi has in common with President Tinubu, it is the hunger for excellence in service delivery or quality leadership deliverables.

 

The energy Chief Executive knew his job was already cut out for him. For a Commission under The Presidency that had lasted over 4 decades in existence and its near-obscurity in the country’s energy sector. For him, there was no better time than now to make a statement of a complete paradigm shift in the way things were hitherto conducted.

 

And from his activities in the last one year, Dr. Abdullahi has shown himself as an ‘energiser’ in motion. From providing leadership for West African sub-region and beyond, to leading advocacy on energy transition from fossil fuel in international space, and a resolve to exploring renewable and alternative energy to provide homegrown solutions to the energy needs of the Nigerian people.

 

As the new Chairman, Nigeria National Committee on World Energy Council (NNC WEC), he had proposed to activate mechanisms with the Economic Community of West African  States (ECOWAS) geared towards instauration of novel action plans that would not only change the ugly story of the energy economy of the country, but also that of West Africa sub-region and Africa as a whole. He is, at the moment working  through tapping opportunities through the West African Power Pool (WAPP), an institution within the ECOWAS to chart a new cause for the energy economy for the country, Africans.

 

  1. ABDULLAHI AS A TOTAL WELFARIST

 

Efficiency often times is a corollary of staff motivation at work place. A value-driven leadership spurs its workforce to efficiency and optimal performance through  incentives and conducive working environment. Dr. Abdullahi as a leader with ample experience that cuts across the globe recognises workers’ psyche at work, especially when such workforce is motivated. He understands that remuneration is a major factor in the determination of a worker’s productivity. He is aware of the near-zero motivation and he was prepared to address the situation frontally by making the necessary moves that would ultimately enliven the workers’ spirit and gear them towards the overall success of his leadership at the Commission.

 

Remuneration

 

Dr Abdullahi on assumption of office, knowing the importance of good remuneration for members of staff and the role it plays in gearing them to put in their best, activated various steps in making sure that staff’s welfare is put at utmost priority.

 

In a bid to actualize this, he established contacts with members of the National Assembly, Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission on possible wage review.

 

CAPACITY BUILDING

Therefore, another milestone he has recorded in a space of few months was to ensure workers undergo serious trainings and re-trainings to enhance their capacity with overall effect on their productivity.

 

Dr. Abdullahi was able to secure two fully-funded PhD foreign scholarships (UK) from the Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF) for two (2) of the Commission’s members of staff. Also, he secured three (3) Masters degree scholarships (Japan) to members of staff through JICA.

 

He believes such opportunity will not only motivate other staff, but also increase brain gain in the Commission when such staff return to contribute their quota.

 

LAYING FOUNDATION FOR ENERGY PROSPERITY

 

Barely 7 months after his assumption of office, precisely on May 8, 2024, the ECN numero uno unveiled a twin document on National Energy Policy (NEP) and National Energy Master Plan (NEMP). The first time in the Commission’s over 40 years of existence. The event which held at the Main Auditorium of the Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF) building had in attendance critical stakeholders from the Energy sector including Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Heads of Government Agencies and Private Sector Practitioners and the Special Adviser to Mr. President on Energy, Ms. Olubukola Arowolo Verheijen who did the unveiling.

 

The 2 documents would go on to provide foundation and pathway for the country’s energy development.

 

IN PUBLIC INTEREST

 

Wood Stove, Safer Environment

 

As a responsive leader who is committed to a safer environment as entrenched in his mandate, Dr. Abdullahi’s leadership pioneered the Commission’s Clean Cooking advocacy with presentation of clean cooking wood stoves to the Nigerian public. This was part of his commitment during the #COP28UAE where he delivered a masterpiece as a representative of President Bola Tinubu to enlist the country on the #CleanCoolingPledge at the gathering of over 70,000 world leaders.

 

Barely 4 months after the event, he launched the Clean Cooking Wood Stove Initiative in line with this global pledge. The pilot scheme held at Kurudu, Mararaba, Nasarawa State saw wood stoves with low emissions distributed to women. The initiative is to ultimately guarantee a safer environment, especially in the country’s hinterlands.

 

Alternative Energy Through Photovoltaic (PV) Electricity

 

On Saturday, July 27, 2024, the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) under Dr. Abdullahi performed a groundbreaking ceremony of Assembly Plant construction at Ihunekwagu Autonomous Community, Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State. The event came up as a corollary of the need to boost access to affordable electricity in the country, and to take several communities off the national grid.

 

In addressing the electricity menace therefore, the visionary Chief Executive of the Energy Commission saw an opportunity in photovoltaic (PV) electricity to provide alternative energy to millions of households. Hence, consolidating the Renewed Hope agenda of Mr. President. Such solar PV module assembling plant which will provide sustainable, reliable, and decentralized power source capable of reaching the remotest part of the country – thereby giving light and hope to Nigerians.

 

Renewable Energy College

 

Dr. Abdullahi’s leadership on Saturday, August 10, 2024 scored another record breaking milestone with groundbreaking ceremony of Barefoot Renewable Energy College (BRE College), Osara, Kogi State. The concept of a Renewable Energy College was in line with the manifesto of President Tinubu whose part agenda is to explore various energy potential of the country.

 

The college is a leap further into transitioning from fossil-based energy resources to renewable energy. The Barefoot Renewable Energy College was conceptualised to bridge the energy manpower gap, drive innovation, competence, and self-reliance in the renewable energy sector. The future is assured with a safer environment and a cleaner energy.

 

SYNERGY/COLLABORATION FOR DEVELOPMENT

 

The Energy Commission boss, in furtherance of his mandate, as the lead agency in the country’s energy pursuits, to leapfrog the Commission for optimal performance in its responsibilities did enter into synergy and collaboration with a number of development partners, international organisations as well as relevant and critical stakeholders. Prominent among these efforts include;

 

  • The United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP) and Clean Cooling Collaborative (CCC) on Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) in the area of air conditioners that aims to reduce carbon emissions, thereby leading to safer environment.

 

  • Signing up a tripartite wind energy agreement at the #COP28UAE held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates with the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and the Niger State Government.

 

  • Teaming up with the United Kingdom’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) for energy planning workshop.

 

  • Collaboration with DEWA and the European Union (EU) delegation on energy transition initiative of his leadership at the Commission.

 

  • Capacity building of the Commission’s staff with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

 

  • Entered into partnership agreement with the National Biomass Ethanol Programme (NBEP) amongst others.

 

As we celebrate this young Nigerian for his verifiable leadership milestones and  footprints in a space of one year of assumption of office, it is equally germane that it is worth placing on record that Dr. Abdullahi will lead and coordinate the record breaking Nigeria-Germany $130billion Global Hydrogen Project from the Office of the Vice President of the Federal Republic. Such pedestal does not come on a platter of gold, but of capacity, competence and trust in this jewel from the savannah.

 

For now and even years to come, the man, Dr. Abdullahi does not look like somebody who is backing down. For him, the task of helping Mr. President achieve his aim of reworking and retooling Nigeria for Nigerians is a cause that cannot be compromised.

The new Vice Chancellor of Bayelsa Medical University, Prof Dimie Ogoina has pledged to transform the tertiary medical institution into a globally recognised leader in medical education, research and innovation.

He spoke via his inaugural speech as the 2nd Vice Chancellor of the young institution saying that his vision for the school aligns with the founding ideals upon which this institution has been established.

Expatiating further, Prof Ogoina who was the Chief Medical Director of Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital before his new appointment, said his vision to transform BMU is deeply rooted in the shared goal of the university community to transform the school into a globally recognised leader in medical education, research and innovation; adding that, together, through collaboration and collective effort, we will work towards a future where BMU is celebrated for academic excellence, technology-driven initiatives, commitment to sustainability, and a significant global health impact.

On his agenda to achieve the goals he already set for his administration; the Vice Chancellor he has a strategic agenda named ASPIRE which he will employ to do the job. He said the agenda simply means, Academic Excellence, Sustainability, Partnerships and Engagement, Innovation and Technology, Research Excellence, Empowerment and Welfare.

He was however, quick to state that his immediate priorities for the next six months will include but not limited to undertaking a familiarization tour of the university to engage directly with students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders including listening sessions to gather valuable insights, identify strengths and challenges, and foster open communication across the BMU community.

The Vice Chancellor said that he intends to appraise and address the university’s Accreditation requirements towards ensuring that all existing programs meet national and international accreditation standards, saying, I will establish an Accreditation Task Force to address accreditation gaps in current programs and assess future needs as the university expands.

He plans to establish a Centre of Excellence Committee to be tasked with recommending and developing Centres of Excellence in key medical fields, adding that using data-driven decision-making, such centres will focus on specialized research and academic leadership.

Prof Ogoina also disclosed that he would conduct a comprehensive audit of Academic and Research Readiness by initiating an audit to assess BMU’s readiness for achieving academic and research excellence. The audit will cover critical areas like faculty qualifications, infrastructure, and research output, informing both the strategic plan and immediate interventions.

Also among his priorities the varsity don said will be the establishment of a Financial Sustainability and Revenue Generation Committee to explore new revenue streams, focusing on consultancy services, entrepreneurial initiatives, and partnerships. This committee will ensure financial sustainability for BMU by diversifying income and minimizing financial risks, he said.

Prof Ogoina, is a Time 100 Honoree of the Class of 2023 who was honoured by the influential Time Magazine as a global player in the field of medical sciences. According the US-based publication last year, in 2017, when Dr. Dimie Ogoina sounded the alarm on a new presentation of Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) that he was seeing in his home country of Nigeria, the world wasn’t ready to listen. Recognizing the importance and potential implications for global spread, he persisted, documenting the potential for sexual transmission of Mpox and publishing the data in high-impact scientific journals. As the global Mpox outbreak unfolded in 2022, Dimie’s insights became critically important to developing better strategies to prevent and control outbreaks.

The publication further added that, Dimie is also a passionate champion for global health equity. He has often made the point that Mpox is not a new disease and that had the world paid attention sooner, we could have avoided a global outbreak. It is this drive that has led Dimie to make significant contributions to the field through his advocacy, leadership, and research.

Time 100 is a yearly list of top 100 influential personalities whose works or deeds have influenced mankind globally. The List is drawn by the equally influential Time Magazine, an American news magazine based in New York City.

PRESIDENT TINUBU MEETS NIPCO EXECUTIVES, COMMENDS INVESTMENTS IN THE CNG SECTOR

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

President Bola Tinubu thanked NIPCO for investing in Nigeria’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) sector during a meeting with the company’s executives at the State House in Abuja.

The President commended NIPCO’s contributions to the nation’s energy transition efforts, particularly its support for the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI).

During the meeting, President Tinubu acknowledged NIPCO’s role as a critical player in enhancing the adoption of CNG as an alternative fuel, noting that such investments align with his administration’s energy security and economic diversification strategy.

He emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships in driving the transition to cleaner

and more affordable energy solutions for Nigerians.

The President lauded NIPCO’s efforts in promoting and supporting the “Switch to CNG” campaign, which has been instrumental in boosting public awareness and providing affordable CNG conversion kits even before the official kickoff of the Presidential CNG Initiative.

He highlighted the significance of this initiative in reducing the nation’s reliance on petrol and cutting down fuel costs for consumers.

CNG, being a cleaner and more affordable fuel, reduces the carbon footprint and saves consumers significant fuel costs.

“Nigeria’s motorists can buy petrol at N1,000 per litre or equivalent gas per Standard Cubic Meter at N200. We have also introduced incentives for commercial motorists to convert from petrol to gas” free of cost,” President Tinubu said.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for private sector investments and expanding Nigeria’s CNG infrastructure to enhance energy efficiency and economic growth.

He further encouraged NIPCO to continue its innovative approach to CNG expansion while supporting the government’s broader goals in the energy sector.

Mr Ramesh Kasangra, NIPCO director, who led the delegation, thanked President Tinubu for his steadfast support of the CNG sector.

He expressed NIPCO’s commitment to furthering the partnership with the government to ensure Nigeria’s energy transition remains on track.

He assured the president that the company was ready to invest in infrastructure to make CNG more accessible nationwide.

According to him, NIPCO has been a key player in various sectors of Nigeria for over four decades and will continue to believe in Nigeria for the long term.

TINUBU’S RESTRUCTURING OF MINISTRIES AND MINISTERIAL PORTFOLIOS

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR has approved the immediate implementation of eight far-reaching actions to reinvigorate the Administration’s capacity for optimal efficiency pursuant of his commitment to deliver on his promises to Nigerians.

The eight actions approved by Mr. President include:

  1. The renaming of the Ministry of Nigeria Delta Development to Ministry of Regional Development to oversee the activities of all the Regional Development Commissions. The Regional Development Commissions to be under the supervision of the new Ministry are; the Niger Delta Development Commission, the South East Development Commission, the North East Development and the North West Development Commission.
  2. The immediate winding up of the Ministry of Sports Development and the transfer of its functions to the National Sports Commission in order to develop a vibrant sports economy;
  3. The merger of the Federal Ministry of Tourism and the Federal Ministry of Arts and Culture to become Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy;
  4. The re-assignment of ten (10) ministers to new ministerial portfolios;
  5. The discharge of five (5) Ministers.
  6. The nomination of seven (7) new ministers for onward transmission to Senate for confirmation;
  7. The appointment of Shehu Dikko as Chairman of the National Sports Commission;

Former Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, on Monday earned huge commendation for inspiring the people, creating a paradigm shift in humanitarian activism in Nigeria and maintaining cordial relationship with the traditional institution across the country.

 

‘’You are a man of great integrity and a rare gift to the fatherland. As a governor, you encouraged women participation in politics, promoted the rights and welfare of minors, built bridges of hope and created an enabling environment for sustainable development. You showed uncommon commitment and patriotism on issues bordering on the Niger Delta region and its development’’.

 

He was also applauded for embarking on massive construction of roads and bridges, creating special economic zones and industrial clusters, constructing modern markets, building Asaba International Airport and expanding the Osubi Airstrip.

 

‘’You touched on the lives of several Deltans especially by your free healthcare programme for pregnant women and children, scholarship scheme for students, micro credit and agricultural schemes. You restored peace in Warri and environs and took action that supported Nigeria’s crude oil production. In a statement on the joyous occasion of the ex-governor’s 70th birthday and his achievements, the Alema of Warri, Chief Emmanuel Oritsejolomi Uduaghan, described the former governor as ‘’a peace promoter and a bridge builder’’.

Former Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, on Monday earned huge commendation for inspiring the people, creating a paradigm shift in humanitarian activism in Nigeria and maintaining cordial relationship with the traditional institution across the country.

‘’You are a man of great integrity and a rare gift to the fatherland’’

He was also applauded for promoting the rights and welfare of minors, encouraging women participation in politics and building bridges of hope.

‘’As a governor, you created an enabling environment for sustainable development, showed uncommon commitment and patriotism on issues bordering on the Niger Delta region and its development. opened a new vista for commercial and economic prosperity of the state, demonstrated unusual knack in the pursuit of education, expanded the frontiers of the dividend of democracy to the people, encouraged citizens to embrace entrepreneurship skills, invested in electricity and housing and provided cheap, comfortable and affordable means of transportation’’.

In a statement on the joyous occasion of the ex-governor’s 70th birthday and his achievements, the Alema of Warri, Chief Emmanuel Oritsejolomi Uduaghan, described the former governor as ‘’a peace promoter and a bridge builder’’.

‘’You delivered in your three point agenda: peace and security, human capital and infrastructural development of the state’’.

He also described his 8-year tenure as the executive governor of Delta State as glorious and memorable.

‘’You pursued the unity and development of Delta State with all sense of patriotism and passion, embarked on massive construction of roads in the three senatorial zones, created special economic zones and industrial clusters, touched on the lives of several Deltans especially by your free maternal health care programme for all pregnant women in the state, free health service for children, scholarship scheme for students, micro credit and agricultural schemes’.

‘’In areas like tourism, sports and housing, you stamped your feet and left legacies that would continue to bear up in many years to come’’.

Alema of Warri who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Webster Group of Companies highlighted the ex-governor’s impact as Commissioner for Health.

‘’As Commissioner for Health, you made a mark that cannot be rivaled. You constructed and upgraded several health centres, provided special rehabilitation funds for hospitals across the state and established remarkable industrial peace in the sector through improved welfare packages. No progress-loving person can deny your character of discipline, integrity and passionate commitment to the sector.

The Warri High Chief emphasized Uduaghan’s administrative experience and political sagacity.

‘’As Secretary to the State Government, you left your name in gold. You brought your vision and vast experience to bear on the purpose-driven administration of Chief James Onanefe Ibori. Indeed, you did the job with dignity, grace and generosity of spirit’’

He also underscored the ex-governor’s natural tendency for open door policy and participatory management style.

Reverse latest hike in petrol price pending court verdict, SERAP tells Tinubu

 

 

 

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Bola Tinubu “to direct the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to immediately reverse the second increase in petrol prices in one month, pending the hearing and determination of the suit before the Federal High Court, Abuja challenging the legality of the powers of the NNPCL to increase petrol prices.”

 

 

 

SERAP had last month filed a lawsuit against the president and NNPCL “over the failure to reverse the apparently unlawful increase in the pump price of petrol, and to probe the allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the NNPCL.”

 

 

 

In the open letter dated 12 October 2024 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said: “The latest increase in petrol prices makes a mockery of the case pending before the Federal High Court, and creates a risk that the course of justice will be seriously impeded or prejudiced in this case.”

 

 

 

SERAP said, “One of the fundamental principles of the rule of law is that it applies to everyone, including presidents and CEOs of public institutions.”

 

 

 

According to SERAP, “It is in the public interest to keep the streams of justice clear and pure, and to maintain the authority and integrity of the court in the case.”

 

 

 

SERAP also said, “Allowing the Federal High Court to hear and determine the case would be entirely consistent with the letter and spirit of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended], your oath of office and oft-repeated promises to uphold the rule of law.”

 

 

 

The letter, read in part: “SERAP notes that since assumption of office in May 2023 you have repeatedly promised, including in your inaugural speech, that ‘Nigeria will be impartially governed according to the Constitution and the rule of law.’”

 

 

 

“Increasing petrol prices while the Federal High Court case is pending would prejudice and undermine the ability of the court to do justice in the case, damage public confidence in the court, prejudice the outcome of the case, as well as impede the course of justice.”

 

 

 

“We would be grateful if the recommended measures are immediately taken following the receipt and/or publication of this letter, failing which SERAP shall consider contempt proceedings and/or other appropriate legal actions to compel your government and NNPCL to comply with our request in the public interest.”

 

 

 

“If not immediately reversed, the latest increase in petrol prices would seriously undermine the integrity of the Nigerian Constitution and have serious consequences for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged Nigerians and the public interest.”

 

 

 

“Protecting the right to a judicial recourse and due administration of justice is of utmost importance, being the cornerstone of an ordered society.”

 

 

 

“The only way in which SERAP can have a fair and effective access to justice in this matter is to allow the court to decide, one way or the other, on the merits of the case before it.”

 

 

 

“Reversing the latest increase in petrol prices would allow the court to render a decision on the central issues in the case, and protect the applicant’s rights and interests.”

 

 

 

“The latest increase in petrol prices while the Federal High Court case is pending constitutes an interference with the right of SERAP to fairly and effectively pursue a judicial challenge to the decision by your government and NNPCL regarding the first increase in petrol prices.”

 

 

 

“According to our information, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited recently increased the price of premium motor spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, across its retail outlets.”

 

 

 

“The retail price of petrol was increased from N897 to N1,030 per litre. This is the second increase in one month, and followed the increase in September from N600 to N855 per litre, and in some instances above N900 per litre.”

 

 

 

“The two increases followed a scarcity caused by the reported refusal by suppliers to import petroleum products for the NNPCL over a $6 billion debt.”

 

 

 

“According to the recently published 2020 audited report by the Auditor General of the Federation (AGF), the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) failed to remit over USD$2 billion and N164 billion of oil revenues into the Federation Account. The Auditor-General fears that the money may have been diverted into private pockets.”

 

 

 

“The NNPCL reportedly failed and/or refused to remit N151,121,999,966. The NNPCL without any justification deducted the money from the oil royalties assessed for 2020 by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) now Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).”

 

 

 

“The NNPCL has failed to account for the missing public funds. The Auditor-General wants the money recovered and remitted into the Federation Account.”

 

 

 

“The NNPCL also failed to remit USD$19,774,488.15 collected as government revenue to the Federation Account. The Auditor-General wants the NNPCL to account for the money, recover and remit it into the Federation Account, and to hand over those suspected to be involved to the ICPC and the EFCC.”

 

 

 

“The Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) Ltd also reportedly failed to account for USD$2,021,411,877.47 and N13,313,565,786.49 of royalties collected from crude oil and gas sales and gas flare.”

 

 

 

“The Auditor-General wants the public funds fully recovered and remitted into the Federation Account and for those suspected to be responsible for the missing public funds to be handed over to the ICPC and the EFCC.”

 

 

 

“SERAP last month filed a lawsuit asking your government and NNPCL challenging the lawfulness of the increase in the pump price of petrol, and the failure to probe the allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the NNPCL.”

 

 

 

“Joined in the suit as Respondents is the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Mr Lateef Fagbemi, SAN. The suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1361/2024 was filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja.”

 

 

 

“Increasing petrol prices would compromise the interest of the Applicant in the Federal High Court case filed against your government and the NNPCL, as the second increase in one month directly touches on the central issues and the legality of the first increase, which the court is set to determine and rule upon.”

 

 

 

“The core of the principle of judicial independence is the complete liberty of the judge to hear and decide the cases before them on the basis of facts and in accordance with the law, without any improper interference, direct or indirect.”
