The renowned caterer and politician died September 30, 2023. He was 59.

The family in a statement said Andrew Aganbi would be buried at Grove Park Cemetery, Marvel Lane.

Top government functionaries, business moguls and celebrities will on Sunday, November 26, 2023, view the first-ever screenings of Okpe Language movie, Izede Efe.

 

The event will take place at Wetland Event Centre, Sapele between 12 noon and 5.00 PM.

 

‘Political and traditional leaders, community and religious leaders as well as administrators and students’ leaders will step out of their houses on Sunday, November 26, 2023’’ a statement by the Executive Producer of the movie, Barrister Kingsley Akpederin said.

 

“The stars of the movie written by Blessing Okpenihwo and Akpederin Kingsley will turn up in Sapele for the film’s main premiere.

 

 

Produced by MTO Movies Academy and Directed by Blessing Okpenihwo, the star-studded movie is the initiative of the Ehensiri Okpe Foundation, and it contains a contemporary message of the need for youths to appreciate hard work and legitimate processes to achieving wealth or financial success.

 

‘’If this message sinks into the psyche of our people especially the youths, the phenomenon of vices like robbery, kidnapping and ritual killings would be a thing of the past’’ the statement said.

 

The theme of the movie, according to Akpederin, is driven home by the reward for hard work and legitimate efforts of two young graduates while two others who put their hands into despicable vices for wealth ended up regrettably.

 

The statement emphasized that the Ehensiri Okpe Foundation opted to have a physical premiering of the movie to reawaken the entertainment consciousness among our people in the area of employing our local languages many of which are gradually going into extinction.

 

The success of the programme he said would motivate the people especially the youths of Delta State and the entire Niger Delta which is a region with several minority languages to employ these languages in various entertainment genres.

 

‘’We need to encourage the reclaiming of various art forms in the various Delta State indigenous languages. The traditional storytelling, proverbs and riddles, various forms of traditional songs, and traditional dances need to be reclaimed. They are our collective heritage which must not be permitted to fade away. If we allow them to finally disappear, then this generation would be cheating on future ones’’.

 

Akpederin urged the government to support the project of reclaiming the collective arts heritage.

 

The notable Okpe leader and film producer also underscored the guest list and the stars of the movie shot at Osubi Town in Okpe Local Government Area and Sapele in Sapele Local Government Area

Gov. Zulum assures NDLEA of enhanced partnership as Marwa rallies Borno stakeholders

 

 

Borno state governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum has assured the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA of his commitment to bolstering the current partnership between his government and the anti-narcotics agency to achieve the goal of a drug free society across all 27 local council areas of the state.

 

Prof. Zulum gave the assurance when he hosted the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) who was in Borno for a three-day war against drug abuse, WADA, advocacy visit to mobilise relevant stakeholders to take ownership of the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

 

While commending the governor for his remarkable achievements in office, Marwa briefed him on the purpose of his visit as part of his ongoing social advocacy sensitization efforts across the country to engage with stakeholders with a view to cascading WADA efforts at the national level down to the grassroots and communities. He said everything must be done to drastically reduce demand for illicit drugs and cut down access and availability of psychoactive substances because of the nexus between illicit drugs and the security challenges facing the state and the country as a whole.

 

Governor Zulum in his response acknowledged Marwa’s inspiring leadership qualities everywhere he had served including Borno as the state’s former military governor and his commitment to the drug fight. He assured the NDLEA boss of the readiness of his government to strengthen and enlarge the existing collaboration in the interest of law and order as well as humanity.

 

While on his advocacy visit to the palace of Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba Elkanemi, the NDLEA chairman urged the respected monarch to continue his support for the fight against illicit drugs while calling for drug test for intending couples as part of conditions for the conduct of weddings. He said this will discourage a lot of young people from going into substance abuse. In his response, the Shehu assured Marwa that all the 59 district heads under his emirate and the Chief Imam of Borno, Alhaji Zanna Laisu Ibrahim Ahmad present at the meeting will go back to their domains to implement the idea including setting up of drug control committees in their communities.

 

The same understanding was equally reached in another engagement with the Council of Ulamas led by the Chief Imam, Zanna Laisu Ibrahim Ahmad. The idea was equally endorsed by the Christian community in another meeting held with leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in Borno. Chairman of CAN in the state, Most Rev Dr. John Bogna Bakeni while commending Marwa’s integrity, hardwork and selfless service to humanity said “the Christian community in Borno is ever ready to partner with you and your agency on this course because government alone can’t fight the drug scourge.”

 

Marwa and his delegation also made a stop over at the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation Hadin Kai, where he encouraged the Theatre Commander, Major General Gold Chibuisi and his commanding officers to continue their support, patriotism and sacrifice for the nation. He called for more collaboration with NDLEA to cut off access to illicit drugs by insurgents as well as drug test and sensitization lectures for troops on the dangers of illicit substances to their wellbeing. Major Gen. Chibuisi in his response promised to make the drug fight part of the counter-insurgency efforts while increasing partnership with the anti-narcotics agency.

 

In his meeting with chairmen of local government areas in the state, Marwa charged them on collaboration as the agency prepares to establish presence in all the local councils across the country in the coming year. The state Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Hon. Sugun Mai Mele and the LGA bosses assured of their preparedness while offering suggestions on how the synergy will work.

Also speaking during an advocacy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Prof. Aliyu Shugaba and his management team, the NDLEA boss called for drug test for fresh and returning students to discourage those with disposition to abuse illicit substances. While asking that the school’s counselling unit be strengthened to be able to respond to early signs of drug abuse, Marwa also assured that “we’ll like to work with the university to fish out members of the university community selling illicit drugs.”

 

In his response, Prof. Shugaba said “drug test is a great idea. We share and buy the idea and believe it will reduce drug abuse. The drug problem is of a serious concern in the university because most of those arrested for theft and other vices are found to be on drugs. As such, we will take your suggestions and implement them immediately.” He called for the setting up of an NDLEA Post on the campus and a Memorandum of Understanding between the university and the agency.

 

A stakeholders meeting was later held at the Indimi Hall of the university where Marwa and his team had interactions with members of other security agencies, students, transport unions, women groups, Youth Corp members, civil society organisations and many others.

Kano High Court jails Benjamin Okechukwu Udeagwu and Benjamin Amos Olamide for internet- related offences

A Kano State High Court presided over by Honorable Justice Ibrahim Musa Karaye has convicted and sentenced two fraudsters, Benjamin Okechukwu Udeagwu and Benjamin Amos Olamide to three years imprisonment for internet- related offences.

They were jailed after pleading guilty to one- count separate charges bordering on internet fraud upon their arraignment by the Kano Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The charge against Udeagwu reads: “That You, Benjamin Okechukwu Udeagwu sometime in September, 2023 in Kano within the jurisdiction of the High Court of Kano with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of $50 by fraudulently impersonating as Brad George a citizen of United States of America which pretence you knew to be false and you thereby committed an offence of cheating by personation contrary to Section 321 of the Penal Code Law and punishable under Section 324 of same law.”

The charge against Olamide reads: “That you Benjamin Amos Olamide ‘m’ sometime in 2022 at Kano, Kano State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did dishonestly induce unsuspecting victims to deliver to you a total sum of $500 ( Five Hundred dollars only) to you as Terry Vince who lives in United States of America, through a gmail account waytospace420cgmail.com which presence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence of cheating contrary to Section 320 of the Penal Code Law of Kano State and punishable under Section 322 of the same law”

In view of their pleas, EFCC’s counsels, Abubakar Hassan Elbadawi and Fatima Mustapha prayed the court to convict and sentence them accordingly.

Counsels for the defendants, M.J Ella and M.E Ogah pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, stressing that “the defendants were first- time offenders and have regretted their actions”.

Justice Karaye convicted and sentenced Udeagwu to one year imprisonment or an option of fine of N20, 000 (Twenty Thousand Naira only).

Olamide, on the other hand, was convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment with an option of fine of N20,000 (Twenty Thousand Naira only).

The two convicts bagged their imprisonment when they were arrested by operatives of the EFCC for impersonation and internet- related offences. They were charged to court and convicted.

EFCC arraigns Oladipo Jimoh alongside his firm, Barma Energy Resources Limited,

The Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, arraigned one Oladipo Jimoh alongside his firm, Barma Energy Resources Limited, before Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos on two-count charges bordering on stealing to the tune of $60, 334.59 (Sixty Thousand, Three Hundred and Thirty Four Dollars, Fifty Nine Cents).

Count one reads: “Oladipo Bankole Jimoh and Barma Energy Resources Limited, sometime between 11th October, 2022 and July 2023 in Lagos, within the Ikeja Judicial Division, dishonestly converted to your own use the sum of $47,534.59, property of Vale Blue Limited.”

Count two reads: “Oladipo Bankole Jimoh and Barma Energy Resources Limited, sometime between 11th October 2022 and July 2023 in Lagos, within the Ikeja Judicial Division, dishonestly converted to your own use the sum of $12,800, property of Vale Blue Limited.”

He pleaded “not guilty” to the two- count charges when they were read to him.

Following his plea, prosecution counsel, G.C. Akaogu, prayed the court for a trial date to enable the prosecution to prove its case against the defendants.

“We also pray that the defendant be remanded at a Correctional Centre,” he said. However, defence counsel, A.K. Akpabio, informed the court of the bail application filed on behalf of her clients.

“We pray that the defendant be remanded in the EFCC custody until the bail is perfected,” she said.

Justice Dada admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200 million, with two sureties in like sum.

The sureties must be gainfully employed and each must have N100 million in his/her account or a valued landed property.

Justice Dada held that “the defendant shall be remanded at the Correctional Centre pending the perfection of his bail.”

The judge also ruled that “in view of the fact that there are no Correctional officers in court today, due to security reasons, the defendant shall temporarily be remanded in the EFCC custody.”

The case was adjourned till February 12, 2024 for commencement of trial.

EFCC arraigns Aisha for criminal misappropriation

 

The Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, arraigned Aisha Sabo before Justice Fadima Murtala Aminu of the Federal High Court, Damaturu, Yobe State on one -count charge bordering on criminal misappropriation to the tune of N10,473,500.00 (Ten Million, Four Hundred and Seventy-Three Thousand Five Hundred Naira).

The lone-count charge reads: “That you Aisha Sabo on or about March, 2022 at Damaturu, Yobe State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court directly converts the aggregate sum of N10,473,500.00 (Ten Million, Four Hundred and Seventy-Three Thousand Five Hundred Naira) which you reasonably ought to have known that it forms part of proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: criminal misappropriation and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 18 (2) (b) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 and punishable under Section 18 (3) of the same Act.”

The defendant pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charge when it was read to her.

EFCC Counsel, Muhktar Ali Ahmed, thereafter prayed the court for a trial date while defence counsel, M.M Ngumurumi applied for the bail of the defendant.

Justice Fadima adjourned the matter till January 24, 2024 for commencement of trial and admitted the defendant to bail with two sureties who must be resident in any local government area of Yobe State.

She further ordered that one of the sureties must be a traditional or religious leader, while the second surety must be a reasonable person in Yobe State. All the sureties are to be verified by the EFCC.

Sabo was arrested by operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Command of the EFCC for converting N10, 473,500.00 belonging to a petitioner to her own use.

Nigeria Sliding into Totalitarianism, Anarchy – PDP Raises Alarm

…Says Nation’s Democracy, Unity in Danger

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) raises alarm to Nigerians and the International Community that the nation is dangerously sliding into totalitarianism and anarchy under the brazenly repressive and anti-people All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

The PDP alerts of attempts and actions of a cabal within the Presidency to emasculate the Institutions of Democracy in Nigeria, especially the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Judiciary in the desperation to foist a one-Party State on Nigerians.

This unfolding anti-democratic scenario is not only evident in the manipulation of elections but also in the conflicting judgments by electoral Courts, especially some Election Appeal Court Panels which judgments are in conflict with the express provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022, INEC’s Guidelines and Regulations for elections.

What is more worrisome is that these obnoxiously contradictory judgments are targeted at the PDP to the effect that elections that were clearly won by PDP candidates are snatched away at the Courts and awarded to defeated candidates of the APC contrary to the provisions of the Law.

Aside from the preponderance of such ugly scenarios in Plateau State, the conduct and outcome of certain election petitions in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Nasarawa and other States of the nation where PDP was robbed of victory through the Courts are pointers to a systemic emasculation of the opposition in a bid to impose a one-Party State and pave way for totalitarianism in the country.

This situation is a clear and present danger to the sustenance of Nigeria’s democracy, unity, political stability and corporate existence as a nation, which is capable of breeding agitation, citizens loss of confidence in the system, restiveness, anarchy and chaos.

Democracy must be allowed to thrive as the government of the people as expressed by their Will at elections. Any intrusion, breach, violation and/or transgression against that expressed Will as being witnessed today under the APC is a clear recipe for serious political crisis and portends grave consequences for our country.

It is therefore imperative to draw the attention of Nigerians and the whole world to the undermining and crippling of democracy and the danger our nation is facing at this moment.

The PDP calls on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the custodian of the government to come clean by speaking out and denouncing any attempt or action that is capable of stifling democracy, the Rule of Law and muzzling of the independence of the Judiciary which is suggestive of a fait accompli on election matters pending before the Courts.

Our Party urges the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and the President of the Court of Appeal to step in and assert the independence of the judiciary at this critical time for the defence and sustenance of democracy and the Rule of Law in Nigeria

The PDP charges Nigerians and indeed all lovers of democracy across the world to rise to the occasion, speak out and take urgent legitimate steps to defend, protect and preserve our hard-earned Democracy from the onslaught of the APC.

  • Appeal Court Ruling: Sanwo-Olu hails Judiciary, recommits self to Greater Lagos Agenda

 

With sense of humility, I welcome the decision of the Court of Appeal, which ruled today in our favour, thereby validating the position of Lagosians who freely cast their ballots to return my deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and I as Governor and Deputy Governor of our dear State. We do not take it for granted.

 

Today’s judicial pronouncements, like those of the Lagos State Elections Petition Tribunal, have buoyed my confidence in our country’s judicial system. The Court examined all the  issues and did justice to them, without leaving anyone in doubt as to who is the rightful winner of the   election.

 

Our party, the All Progressives Congress(APC) will continue to maintain its firm belief in the judicial process.

My deputy and I have satisfied all the constitutional requirements and are now more focused on delivering the democratic dividends to our people.

 

With deep gratitude to the Almighty God, I humbly accept today’s Appeal Court verdict, with a sense of responsibility and a desire to continue with the giant strides of our administration so as to leave a great legacy for our people.

President Bola Tinubu will, on Thursday, join other Heads of State and Government in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, to celebrate the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary and Armed Forces Day.

President Tinubu will arrive in Bissau on Thursday for the ceremony, which will be hosted by President Umaro Sissoco Embalo.

Guinea-Bissau marked its 50th Independence Anniversary on September 24, 2023, but the Government had scheduled all celebrations for November 16, 2023.

The President is expected to return to Nigeria on Thursday.

NBA commends EFCC on its adherence to the rule of law in the fight against economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption.

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on its adherence to the rule of law in the fight against economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption.

 

It gave this commendation on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 when a delegation of the Association led by the Chairperson, Human Right Committee of the NBA, Benin Branch, Edo State, Ebehitale Osarumwense paid a courtesy visit to the Benin Zonal Command of the EFCC.

According to Osarumwense, the dedication of the Commission in keeping faith with the rule of law in combating economic and financial crimes is commendable, urging it to intensify efforts in responding to petitions from the public.

“We appreciate you for accepting to engage with us in this meaningful dialogue. The relationship between our organization and yours has come a long way, I felt this was an opportunity to familiarize and further strengthen the existing cordial relationship between us”, she said.

Responding, the Benin Zonal Commander of EFCC, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE1 Kanu Idagu said the Executive Chairman of the Commission , Ola Olukoyede upon resumption of office, has stressed the need for professionalism, integrity and the supremacy of the rule of law in the works of the EFCC.

He pointed out that the EFCC is a creation of the law and guided by the law. He urged lawyers to always verify claims made by their clients against the EFCC in order not to be misled.

“Our activities are in line with the rule of law. There is nothing we are going to do that will be at odds with the law. So, I want to urge you to always verify claims made by your clients against the EFCC in order not to be misled because the EFCC has zero tolerance for corruption and will not condone any act of professional misconduct in any of its personnel”, he said.

Court jails eight internet fraudsters Edo State

 

The Benin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on November 6, 2023 secured the conviction and sentencing of eight internet fraudsters to various jail terms by Justice Efe Isoken Ikponmwonba of the Federal High Court sitting in Benin, Edo State.

The convicts are: Pele Osai Wisdom, Olise Godspower Iknna , Okeke Benjamin Chinazor , Macdonald Iriaremhen Onajasike, Prince Joshua, Jethro Saapila , Gilbert Nelson Onyeka and Ojo Osatohhanmwen Favour.

They were jailed after pleading guilty to one- count separate charge bordering on obtaining under false pretense and unlawful possession of fraudulent documents.

One of the charges reads: “That you Pele Ossai Wisdom ( a.k.a Dickson Orakh ) sometimes between 19th February 2020 and 10th June 2020 in Ekpoma within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court with intent to defraud did obtain the aggregate sum of N3, 374,96.53 from one Dawn Aschenbrenner, a Canadian national under the pretense that the said money is the legal fee of one Emma Marcus who defrauded her of the sum of $213.832 which pretense you knew is false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act ,2006 and punishable under Section 1(3)of the same Act.

The convicts, upon their arraignment on October 6, 2023, pleaded guilty to their respective charges when read to them, prompting EFCC’s counsels: I.M Elodi, I.K Agwai, Salihu Ahmed and KY Bello to pray the court to convict and sentence them accordingly.

In her judgment, Justice Ikponmwonba convicted and sentenced Pele Ossai Wisdom to 12 months’ imprisonment with an option of N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira) fine. He also forfeited the cash sum of N3,374.96.53 (Three Million, Three Hundred and Seventy-Four Thousand, Ninety-Six Naira, Fifty-Three kobo) refund to Dawn Aschenbrenner, a Canadian national through the EFCC.

Onyeka, Iknna , Chinazor and Favour were sentenced to three years imprisonment with an option of N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira) fine. The duo of Joshua and Onajasike bagged two years imprisonment with an option of N100,000 (One Hundred Thousand naira) fine. Similarly, Saapila bagged two years imprisonment with an option of N300,000 (Three Hundred Thousand Naira) fine.

In addition, the convicts forfeited mobile phones, laptops and money in their bank accounts, being proceeds of crimes to the Federal government of Nigeria.

The convicts started their journey to the Correctional Centre when they were arrested by operatives of the Commission based on actionable intelligence on their alleged internet fraud-related activities. They were charged to court and convicted.

CBN To Allow Old Design Naira Banknotes As Legal Tender, Ad Infinitum

 

Please recall that the Central Bank of Nigeria introduced the redesign of N200, N500 and N1,000 denominations in October 2022 and certain deadlines were set for the old design of these denominations to cease as legal tenders. Without prejudice, the Central Bank of Nigeria wishes to inform the general public of its desire to extend the legal tender status deadline of the old design of N200, N500 and N1,000 denominations, ad infinitum. This is in line with international best practices and to forestall a repeat of earlier experiences. Thus, all banknotes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in accordance with Section 20(5) of the CBN Act 2007, will continue to remain legal tender, ad infinitum, even beyond the initial December 31, 2023, deadline. The Central Bank of Nigeria is working with the relevant authorities to vacate the subsisting court ruling on the same subject. Accordingly, all CBN branches across the country will continue to issue and accept all denominations of Nigerian banknotes, old and redesigned, to and from deposit money banks (DMBs). The general public is enjoined to continue to accept all Naira banknotes (old or redesigned) for day-to-day transactions and handle these banknotes with utmost care, to safeguard and protect the lifecycle of the banknotes. Also, the general public is encouraged to embrace alternative modes of payment, e-channels, for day-to-day transactions.

President Bola Tinubu, on Monday night, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, advanced negotiations concerning a multi-billion dollar infrastructure finance facility from the Islamic Development Bank to fund a multi-sectoral portfolio of infrastructure projects at the federal and sub-national levels in Nigeria.

This development was the outcome of substantive investment discussions held between President Tinubu and the Vice-President (Country Programs) of the Islamic Development Bank, Dr. Mansur Muhtar, after the President’s return from evening prayers.

Kelvin Ifeanyi gets one-year jail term for obtaining money under false pretence

 

 

Justice P. I. Ajoku of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has convicted and sentenced an internet fraudster; Kelvin Ifeanyi to a one-year jail term in the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre.

He was jailed on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 upon being arraigned by the Port Harcourt Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a one-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretence contrary to Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

The count charge reads: “That you, Kelvin Ifeanyi on or about the 21st day of July 2022 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court with intent to defraud obtained the sum of $2,400 (Two Thousand Four Hundred Dollars) Worth of Bitcoin Currency from one John Dubhthaigh a foreign national under the pretence that you are a Crypto Trader which pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act”.

He pleaded guilty to the one count charge when it was read to him.

In view of his plea, prosecution counsel, E.K. Bakam, tendered some documents to establish his case and prayed the court to convict and sentence the defendant as charged

Counsel to the defendant, E. D. Ani prayed the court to temper justice with mercy, stressing that the “defendant is a first-time offender with no previous criminal records”.

Justice Ajoku, found the defendant guilty, convicted, and sentenced him to one year in the Correctional Service with One Hundred Thousand Naira as an option of fine (N100,000) payable into the Consolidated Revenue Account of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The court also ordered that the iPhone 11 Promax and one Redmi mobile device recovered from the convict should be forfeited to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The sum of Two Thousand, Four Hundred United States Dollars ($2,400) recovered from the convict should also be forfeited and returned to the victim, John Dubhthaigh, a foreigner.

The judge also ordered the convict to depose an affidavit of good behavior before the court.

Ifeanyi started his journey to the Correctional Service when he was arrested by operatives of the Commission, alongside his syndicate members for internet-related crimes. He was charged to court and convicted.

Civil Society Organizations reiterated support for EFCC, in the task of fighting economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption.

 

 

Civil Society Organizations, CSOs in Oyo State, have reiterated their support for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in the task of fighting economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption.

They made this commitment in Ibadan, Oyo State on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at the “EFCC/CSOs Engagement“ programme that held in the State.

Executive Chairman, EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, lauded the strategic roles CSOs are playing in the fight against corruption, stating that engagement with them was to share ideas on how to deepen the fight against corruption. The EFCC boss, who spoke through the Ibadan Zonal Commander, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE1 Halima Mustapha Rufa’u, expressed appreciation to the CSOs for reviews of the Commission’s works so as to enhance its performance.

“You are one of the most critical allies of the EFCC. Our partnership has been progressive and is still evolving. We greatly value your critical reviews as they have ensured that we remain faithful to the Nigerian people in the discharge of our mandate”, he said. He further urged then to continue to align themselves with the progressive aspirations of Nigerians for corruption to be reduced to the barest minimum, if not completely eliminated.

In her Speech, Deputy Director, Creative Communications, DCE Nwayinma Okeano, challenged CSOs to correct people’s misconception about EFCC’s anti-corruption activities in their various communities. “Reorient the public about what we do. Let me say clearly that no crime is too big or too small. The same way we are arresting politicians, is also the same way we are arresting internet fraudsters”, she said. She reassured them that the EFCC is open to the public, urging them to always send complaints and petitions using various channels of communication.

The CSOs, on their part, came up with suggestions in areas they think the EFCC can explore. Dr. Rosemary Odigbo, one of the arrow heads of the group, stressed that, the fight against corruption should not be left to the EFCC alone, pointing out that all citizens and stakeholders have roles to play through strategic partnerships. She enjoined the Commission to explore other areas in sending the anti-corruption message, such as entertainment, social media, partnering with telecommunication organizations, frequent town hall meetings, creating and sustaining advocacy groups, among others.

Discussions also centered on how to incorporate corruption studies into school curriculum across the country. “As parents, it is our duty to start this fight from home when our children are young, encourage them to learn handwork to earn a living, because unemployment is one of the reasons why a lot of our youths are into crimes”, they said.

Additionally, “we also want EFCC to go after musicians and celebrities who are promoting yahoo practices in their songs and lifestyle. They want the Commission to work more with the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission, NBC and the National Film and Video Censor Board for the regulation of contents that are not edifying the public. “ they said.

At the end of the interaction, a Communique to help strengthen the working relationship between the EFCC and CSOs in the Ibadan Zonal Command was issued.

Governor Seyi Makinde mourns demise of PDP National Women Leader

Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has expressed shock over the death of the National Women Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prof Stella Effah-Attoe.

The governor described the demise of Effah-Attoe, a member of the party’s National Working Committee, as a huge loss to the PDP family and to women in politics.

He expressed heartfelt condolences to her family, the PDP NWC, the entire PDP family in the country and the people of Cross River State, where she hailed from, praying to God to grant repose to her soul and stand by everyone she left behind.

The governor said: “I received the news of the death of the National Women Leader of our party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prof Stella Effah-Attoe, with a great shock.

Fubara dares Wike, Rivers State lawmakers

 

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State on Monday said he has not committed any offence to warrant impeachment by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment,” the governor said while addressing his supporters at the Assembly Complex.

The governor, who assured the people of the state of getting the dividends of democracy, said he would speak on the matter at the appropriate time.

“Let me assure the people of Rivers that I will continue to ensure that you get the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time I will address the press,” he said.

A fresh crisis engulfed the Rivers Assembly amidst rumours of an impending impeachment procedure against Fubara as the House on Monday removed its leader, Edison Ehie.

The House members led by their Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, served an impeachment notice on Fubara before they fled for safety as tear gas was fired outside the Complex.

Addressing his supporters, who protested the development outside the Assembly Complex, the governor said he has not done anything to warrant an impeachment proceeding by the Assembly.

The development occurred hours after a fire broke out at the Assembly Complex on Sunday night.

It was unclear if the fire was connected with the political imbroglio but rumours of a rift between Fubara and his predecessor Nyesom Wike who is now Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister have been brewing for some time now.

The state Assembly reportedly signed an impeachment notice on Governor Siminalaye Fubara.

In a session that was presided over by the Speaker, Rt Hon Martins Amaewhule and attended by a good number of members, the Leader of the House, Hon Edison Ehie and those loyal to the governor were suspended.

The explosion that occurred in the Assembly on Sunday night was alleged to have been a ploy to stop the lawmakers from gaining access to the Assembly on Monday.

As early as 7 a.m., some lawmakers made their way into the House and immediately commenced plenary where they all signed the impeachment notice on the governor.

Meanwhile, the entire Moscow Road leading to the Rivers State House of Assembly has been barricaded by armed policemen.

The Isale Eko Descendants’ Union has extended warm congratulations to the esteemed Lagos community and beyond on the occasion of the 80th birthday of His Royal Majesty, Oba Rilwan Babatunde Osuolale Aremu Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos.

 

In a press statement signed by its Chairman, Adeniji Kazeem, SAN, the IDU also announced the donation of medical supplies to the Iga Idungaran Community Health Centre to mark the birthday of the revered monarch.

 

The Union said the significant milestone is a testament to a lifetime of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to their beloved community.

 

Born on October 29, 1943, HRM Oba Akiolu is a distinguished alumnus of Ansar-Ud-Deen Grammar School, Surulere, and a graduate of law from the University of Lagos. With a remarkable 32-year career in the Nigeria Police Force, he ascended to the position of Assistant Inspector-General of Police in 1999. His glorious journey led him to be crowned as the 21st Oba of Lagos on May 24, 2003, succeeding the late Oba Adeyinka Oyekan, who reigned from 1965 to March 1, 2003.

 

The IDU said Oba Akiolu’s legacy is deeply interwoven with the history and identity of Lagos, saying his reign has been marked by wisdom, grace, and a profound dedication to the well-being of his subjects. The group insisted that under His Majesty’s leadership, Lagos has witnessed remarkable growth and development, and the city continues to thrive as a centre of commerce, culture, and tradition.

 

The group said Oba Akiolu is celebrated for his benevolence, candour, and bravery, stressing further that the monarch’s impact on the lives and well-being of the people of Lagos and Nigeria is profound.

 

IDU added that the retired Assistant Inspector General of Police should also be celebrated for his modernization efforts at the palace, which include the construction of a guest house, library, and health centre, adding that the Iga Idunganran Health Centre, funded entirely by the Oba, provides free healthcare services to the community.

 

“He has also been instrumental in securing employment opportunities for numerous Lagos indigenes within the Lagos State, Federal Government, and private organizations. Additionally, he has been at the forefront of the return of properties belonging to Lagos indigenes, including the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, from the Federal Government.

 

“Our revered monarch has been a resolute and effective leader, ensuring peace and harmony in his domain through timely and astute guidance to his subjects and governmental bodies. Oba Akiolu’s reign has witnessed the progress of his subjects in all aspects of human life, including the attainment of the highest offices in the nation.

…Says Her Death is a Devastating Loss to Nigeria

The National Working Committee (NWC) and indeed the entire Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) family, is utterly devastated over the death of the National Woman Leader of our great Party, Prof. Stella Effah-Attoe.

Our hearts bleed! Our Party and Nation have lost one of our best and brightest. Prof. Effah-Attoe’s death is a huge blow not only to her family but also to the PDP, the academic community, the people of Cross River State and indeed the Nation.

Prof. Effah-Attoe was very brilliant, towering and magnificent in all spheres, but yet lived an exceptionally humble, pleasant, sociable, gracious, compassionate and loving life. She touched lives in many positive ways and made pivotal contributions towards the growth and development of our Nation.

She was a dedicated teacher, politician, author and fearless mobilizer who always stood for the truth; fought for justice, equity and fairness and gave her energy, passion and resources in the pursuit of the rights of women in Nigeria.

Over the years, as Commissioner for Education and later Commissioner for Information and Culture in Cross River State, member of the Cross River State House of Assembly, member of Governing Board of several Cross River State and Federal Government Agencies and Programmes; a University Professor and one of the most decorated scholars in Nigeria, she distinguished herself as an amazon with extraordinary intellectual capacity for leadership and national service.

As the National Woman Leader of our great Party, she brought in an uncommon intellectual aptitude into Party administration especially in mobilizing women for greater participation in politics and governance.

The PDP will always remember her tireless contributions alongside other PDP leaders in the effort to rebrand and strengthen our great Party in the build-up to the 2023 general elections in line with the mission to rescue, rebuild and redirect our nation from misrule.

Prof Effah-Attoe’s death has left a huge vacuum in our Party but we take solace in the fact that she lived a devout Christian life, triumphed in her chosen path and left indelible marks in the service of the Nation and humanity.

Three Day Seminar on Protocol and Security Closes in Abuja

First Lady admonishes participants to go to their various states and pass on the lessons learnt

Wives of top government functionaries and other top female officials in Nigeria say they will strive to enhance the image of the country by paying more attention to their public conduct and security.

They made this collective resolution at the end of a three-day seminar on protocol and security, convened by the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON in Abuja.

After eight papers delivered by experts on security, protocol, etiquette, improved public conduct and diplomatic relations, participants at the three-day seminar take stock.

For many of the participants who cut across former First Ladies of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Members of the National Assembly, wives of NASS members, Wives of Governors and former governors, Female Deputy Governors, Ministers, wives of ministers, Wives of Service Chiefs among others, the 3 day seminar was an eye opener for them especially as it relates to security issues.

The participants expressed appreciation to the First Lady for building their capacity as role models and image makers for the country.

With the First Lady and former First Ladies, Turai Yaradua and Dame Patience Jonathan making inputs, the session recalled some of the lessons learnt during the seminar, particularly those that dwelt on the need for cultural intelligence, security awareness and proper conduct among participants and other women on the social media.

A meet and greet session by the convener of the seminar, First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, set a relaxed tone day, as participants availed themselves the opportunity to interact with the First lady and share ideas on diverse issues.

The gathering had the opportunity to also view the video on the “Every Home a Garden” competition by the Renewed Hope Initiative, an Initiative of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON. The competition which is open to every woman from all the States of the federation, including the FCT entails them planting a garden at home whereby the harvest can provide food on their table and enough to give their neighbor. The winner of the competition which will be announced in December 2024 has a prize money of N20million naira.

The 3-day seminar on Protocol and Security was rounded up with the presentation of certificate of participation to the over 800 participants.

SERAP writes INEC, seeks recognition of right to vote securely

 

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) “to use the mandates of INEC to pursue constitutional and legal reforms that would explicitly recognize Nigerians’ right to vote and to vote securely in free, fair and honest elections as a fundamental right.”

 

SERAP also urged him “to promote constitutional and legal reforms that would contain explicit mandatory provisions on internet voter registration, and the use of modern technology, including in casting and counting, voter registration and systems for reporting results.”

 

In the letter dated 28 October 2023 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said: “The explicit recognition of the right to vote and to vote securely would improve the right to representative democracy in the country.”

 

SERAP said, “The continuing resistance by politicians to bring the country’s electoral legal rules up to date with modern technology, and make the use of technology mandatory in our electoral process is entirely inconsistent and incompatible with Nigerians’ right to effectively participate in their own government.”

 

According to SERAP, “Large-scale election infrastructure insecurity poses serious threats to the fundamental right to vote that INEC can no longer ignore. The challenges facing the electoral process can be addressed by a swift adaptation and innovation in both election laws and election technology.”

 

The letter, read in part: “Democracy works best when everyone participates. Legally enforceable right to vote is the bedrock of any democratic society. The right to vote and to vote securely is too important to be left to the whims of politicians.”

 

“Confidence in the electoral process is on the decline. Many Nigerians are expressing concerns about the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.”

 

“Nigerian politicians have little incentive to pursue genuine constitutional and legal reforms that would improve the exercise by Nigerians of their right to participation in the electoral process and in the mechanisms of government.”

 

“INEC has constitutional and statutory responsibilities to promote and advance the right of eligible Nigerians to vote and to vote securely as part of their internationally recognized right to political participation.”

 

“Under section 2(b) of the Electoral Act 2022, the commission ‘shall have power to promote knowledge of sound democratic election processes.’ INEC also has the constitutional mandates to take the recommended measures under Section 153 of the Nigerian Constitution and paragraph 15(a) of the third schedule.”

 

“INEC has the mandates to promote, protect and facilitate the exercise of the right to vote and to vote securely as a fundamental right. Exercising such mandates would rebuild public confidence in the ability of the commission to effectively perform its responsibilities and to act in good faith.”

 

“The major problem facing the country’s democracy is the lack of respect for Nigerians’ right to participation and the concomitant lack of trust in election results. If citizens do not believe in the election process, then the entire system of democratic government becomes a questionable enterprise.”

 

“The explicit recognition of legally enforceable fundamental right to vote and to vote securely in free, fair and honest elections would protect the right to participation, safeguard and strengthen the credibility and integrity of the country’s democracy.”

 

“It would rein politicians who continue to abuse the electoral rules to distort and undermine the right to participation with almost absolute impunity. It would also amplify the voices of the people, not corrupt politicians, and modernize and secure the country’s future elections against any threats.”

 

“The country’s electoral legal rules are entirely inconsistent and incompatible with the requirements of the right to political participation, which is explicitly guaranteed under article 25 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and article 13 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights which Nigeria has ratified.”

 

“The right to vote and vote securely would also impose clear obligations on the electoral commission and other authorities to ensure the ‘will of the people’ in elections, and to administer elections in an objective and neutral manner, and in conformity with modern technology.”

 

“The crisis confronting Nigerian elections and lack of public trust and confidence in the electoral process can be addressed if the right of Nigerians to vote and to vote securely is explicitly recognized as justiciable constitutional right.”

 

“Nigerians do not currently enjoy explicit and enforceable right to vote and to vote securely. As the 2023 general elections have shown, the absence of this right in the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended] has seriously undermined the right of Nigerians to effectively participate in their own government, and the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.”

 

“Although the Nigerian Constitution provides in Section 14(1)(c) that, ‘the participation by the people in their government shall be ensured in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution’, this is not recognized as legally enforceable fundamental human right.”

 

 

“Unless INEC urgently begins the process of pushing for the explicit recognition of Nigerians’ right to vote and to vote securely, politicians would continue to use the country’s antiquated electoral legal rules for personal gain, and to deny the people their right to participation.”

 

“We would be grateful if INEC begins the process of taking the recommended measures within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall consider appropriate legal actions to compel INEC to comply with our requests in the public interest.”

 

“SERAP notes that ahead of the 2023 general elections, INEC disclosed that over seven million Nigerians who carried out their voter pre-registration online but could not complete the process at physical centres would not be entitled to vote.”

 

“The right to vote and to vote securely as well as the right of the people to expect representative government through the process of elections is basic to democracy.”

 

“Without the explicit constitutional recognition of the right to vote and to vote securely as a fundamental right, millions of Nigerians would continue to be denied their right to participate in their own government.”

 

“The Nigerian Constitution and Electoral Act are grossly inadequate to guarantee citizens’ right to political participation which encapsulates the right to vote and to vote securely. Our electoral legal rules are based on a set of archaic notions that do not serve the core function of participation and a representative democracy.”

 

“The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance explicitly assert the right to vote as part of the fundamental right to participate in democracy.”

 

“Article 25 of the Covenant, article 13 of the African Charter and articles 2, 3 and 4 of the African Charter on Democracy contain provisions on the right to participation. Nigerian electoral laws ought to be such that would give effect to the voters’ will and uphold the popular mandate through free, fair, and honest elections.”

 

“The right to vote in a democracy is important because so many other matters depend upon its exercise. Nigeria ought not to be stuck with electoral rules, structures and procedures that violate basic ideas of participation, fairness and representative government.”

“The right to vote and vote securely would also impose clear obligations on the electoral commission and other authorities to ensure the ‘will of the people’ in elections, and to administer elections in an objective and neutral manner, and in conformity with modern technology.”

 

“The crisis confronting Nigerian elections and lack of public trust and confidence in the electoral process can be addressed if the right of Nigerians to vote and to vote securely is explicitly recognized as justiciable constitutional right.”

 

“Nigerians do not currently enjoy explicit and enforceable right to vote and to vote securely. As the 2023 general elections have shown, the absence of this right in the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended] has seriously undermined the right of Nigerians to effectively participate in their own government, and the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.”

While providing participants at the forum with an update on Julius Berger’s business performance, strategy and operations in the 2023, as well as speaking to the outlook for the business of the company, the Managing Director, Engr Dr Lars Richter confidently said: “The company is transiting to a conglomerate by continually driving growth across our core businesses and our subsidiaries, through which we deliver value-added services along the entire value chain of the construction industry.”

On Julius Berger’s sustainability and governence policy, Richter said sustainability is embedded in the company’s business, adding that sustainable business is the best business. “We constantly assess the impact of our operations and actively generate shared value for our company, employees, communities, and in the region where we operate. We support and have embodied within our processes the 15 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We also prioritise environmental sustainability and have mechanisms in place that monitor emissions and manage waste,” he further said

Speaking on the financial highlights of the company within the period to provide additional information to participants at the Forum, Director of Finance, Christian Hausemann said due to management’s rigorous cost management, gross profit, operating profit, and pre-tax margins have improved compared to 2022, despite the local and global inflation environment.

Hausemann said, both of the company’s assets and equity “have recorded very positive trends.” Hausemann added that the company invested in property, plant, and equipment to support its growth and diversification strategy. “The upward trend in return on equity continued and is recorded at an annualised rate of 15.8% as of June, which demonstrates JBN’s ability to create value for its shareholders,” he said. Saying “We are on the right track”, the Financial Director, Hausemann further added that the company’s return on assets which was negatively affected in 2020 rebounded positively from 2021 to 2023, reflecting a sustained upward trend in Julius Berger’s business activity.

At the Questions and Answers session, both Richter, the Managing Director, and Hausemann, the Financial Director, cleared any doubts whatsoever coming from shareholders amidst pledges to deliver greater dividends by year ending and going forward.

Supreme Court dismisses Atiku’s Appeal challenging the Judgement of the Presidential Election Petition court, for lacking in merit.

 

Justice Okoro also said the testimonies of Atiku and Obi’s state collation officers are merely hearsays.

According to him, it was impossible for the testifiers to be in all parts of their states at the same time to prove their case that there was electoral fraud.

Justice Okoro said the decision of the Appeal Court is unassailable.

 

On the petition seeking to nullify Tinubu’s election on non-compliance with the electronic transmission of results, the Supreme Court ruled: When IREV fails, it does not stop the collation of results. The non-function of IREV does not reduce voters’ confidence.

On these grounds, Justice Okoro said the application is hereby dismissed and refused.

 

He said Atiku failed to convince the Supreme Court why he waited until the PEPC concluded the appellant’s suit. Justice Okoro said Atiku’s lawyers were tardy and not diligent in obtaining the documents from CSU.

 

Justice Okoro noted that Atiku’s attempt to introduce fresh evidence with a view to extend the time to adjudicate the case is unfortunate.

Consequently, he said, since the Presidential Election Petition Court has no jurisdiction to entertain fresh evidence, the Supreme Court has no jurisdiction to accept fresh evidence.

He said it has to be noted that the 180 days imposed is immutable, and cannot be extended.

 

According to him, on this application, fresh evidence is not received as a matter of cause.

After the expiration of the time limit by the Electoral Act, he said petitioner shall not be allowed to amend their petitions after the 21 days allowed by law.

Citing section 182 of the Electoral Ect, Justice Okoro says Atiku failed to apply to the court to amend his petition to bring fresh evidence against Tinubu.

 

He says it is shocking to have Atiku’s argument in print knowing how election petitions have suffered delays in the past.

 

Justice Okoro said it is unfortunate to go back to the dark old days.

 

He said he has carefully perused the record of appeal. According to him, Atiku filed the appeal on the last day of the time frame allowed to lodge an appeal.

The 180 days prescribed by the law lapsed on 17 September 2023. In the circumstance of this case, he said the case cannot activate Section 22 of the Supreme Court Act to admit fresh evidence.

He added that jurisdiction is the fulcrum upon which a court’s decisions are based.

For this court to receive fresh evidence, the application runs foul of the evidence act, he said.

 

He says the jurisdiction of the court is at the foundation of adjudication.

 

Justice Okoro recalls Chris Uche’s arguments regarding the difficulty in obtaining Tinubu’s academic records from CSU. He says he will start from the beginning which is on jurisdiction.

 

He says it is crystal clear that the law of Nigeria does not allow anyone to adduce additional evidence on appeal, according to the Lead Counsel to Tinubu, Wole Olanikpekun.

 

The Justice recounts President Tinubu’s effort to thwart the release of his Chicago State University (CSU) academic documents to Atiku and how the President’s request was overruled by a US Court.

He says Tinubu filed an 11-paragraph counter affidavit to Atiku’s application to tender fresh evidence against the President.

 

 

Atiku Abubakar’s plea to file fresh evidence against President Bola Tinubu hits rock

 

The Supreme Court has dismissed Atiku Abubakar’s plea to file fresh evidence against President Bola Tinubu. 

 

Justice Inyang Okoro delivered the verdict on Thursday during the hearing of the appeals filed against Bola Tinubu’s win at the Presidential Election Tribunal Court (PEPC).

 

Atiku had approached the court to grant him the leave to bring more evidence to establish that Tinubu submitted a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

 

Atiku’s counsel Chris Uche (SAN), said the 32-page document released to his client should be admitted in the interest of justice.

 

But Justice Okoro said the time frame to admit such evidence has elapsed.

 

He cited Section 285(5) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, which provides for the PEPC to hear and determine all petitions arising from the presidential election.

 

He said since the 180 days had expired on September 17, the Supreme Court had no jurisdiction to admit the document

 

The Court ruled that the non-availability of election results on the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) is no ground for the nullification of the February 2023 presidential election.

 

Justice Inyang Okoro, leader of the five-panel of Supreme Court justices said it is clear that the petition seeking to nullify the election for noncompliance must not only be ready to prove how the non-compliance affected the outcome election but must be ready to give evidence.

 

According to him, the petitioner abandoned the duties imposed on them to prove the gravity of noncompliance and its effect.

 

Justice Okoro said the Electoral Act empowers the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the best method to use during an election.

 

He added that the unavailability of results on the IReV, cannot be a ground to nullify the the election.

 

Justice Okoro says the petitioner needed to lay credible evidence to prove the alleged noncompliance. According to him, he has not produced an original or certified true copy of the evidence they want the court to rely on.

 

He held that the non-availability of the presidential election results on the IReV Portal did not affect the outcome of the election.

President Bola Tinubu has expressed grief over the passing of Alhaji Adamu Fika, elder statesman and one-time Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, who died on Tuesday at the age of 90.

President Tinubu, in mourning the Wazirin Fika, recalled the salient roles he played in nurturing the enduring institution responsible for the articulation and implementation of public policies at a trying time for the Federal Civil Service.

He said the late Fika’s contributions both as Head of Service and chairman of different civil service reform panels were indelible in the annals of Nigeria’s history.

“Alhaji Adamu Fika’s life of service to Nigeria saw him hold various important positions, before his elevation to the Office of Head of the Civil Service of the Federation; a post he held until his retirement,” the President said.

Condoling with the government and people of Yobe State, President Tinubu said Alhaji Fika left behind a legacy of accomplishments, integrity, passion for service, and commitment worthy of emulation by public servants and other compatriots.

“May Allah forgive his sins and grant him Aljannah Firdaus,” the President prayed.

The role played by the Muslim community in shaping the socio-religious values of Lagos dates back to the period of introduction of Islam to Yoruba land, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said.

 

The Governor said the unbroken service by the House of Chief Imam of Lagos towards strengthening the peace and tolerance in the State over the centuries has elevated Lagos Central Mosque (Moshalashi Jimoh) as a critical faith institution promoting the stability in the State.

 

Sanwo-Olu spoke at the ceremony organised by the Lagos Central Mosque to mark 100 Years Remembrance of the late Chief Imam Ibrahim Ankuri and 170 Years of the Turbaning of the late Chief Imam Nafiu Gana.

 

The Governor, his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and members of the State cabinet physically graced the event held in the mosque hall at Nnamdi Azikiwe Street, Lagos Island.

 

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos Muslim community had built centuries old legacy of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence, stressing that the community’s deployment of Islamic and conventional teachings to strengthen the moral ethos fundamentally transformed the State’s moral values.

 

The Governor urged the community to continue to emulate the values bequeathed by the late Imam Ibrahim, asking the Muslims to devote themselves to activities that would protect the legacy laid down by the House of Imam.

 

He said: “The centenary anniversary prayer of the former Chief Imam of Ibrahim Ankuri presents a unique occasion that brings together all Muslims in Lagos to reflect on the historic legacy bequeathed by the spiritual leader of this great Islamic institution in our State. This centenary event is a significant moment in the calendar of Lagos Islamic community, which has become a critical institution that laid a good foundation that we are all enjoying today in our State.

The late Chief Imam Ibrahim Ankuri, born in 1825 in lga Iduganran, was a distinguished Islamic figure who hailed from the family of Chief Imam Nofiu Gana of Isale Eko.

 

Ibrahim’s exposure to Islamic teachings ignited his passion for the faith, fostering a deep and profound understanding of Islam.

 

In 1891, the late Ibrahim was appointed the Chief Imam of Lagos Central Mosque based on his devotion to promoting Islamic faith within Isale Eko community and beyond.

 

Imam Ibrahim’s influence played key roles in exposing Muslim children to western education. Under his guidance, the first Muslim school – Government Muslim School – was officially inaugurated in 1896, after which Islamiyah Grammar School was founded on Bamgbose Street, Lagos Island.

At 2023 Norman Borlaug International Dialogue: VP Shettima Says Nigeria Emerging Best Investment Hub for Agribusiness

***Says we’re exploring innovative strategies to achieve food, nutrition security

The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has wooed foreign investors to invest in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, assuring them that the country is ready for agribusiness.

He said Nigeria remained the best place to invest given its 70 million hectares of underutilised arable land, which, according to him, is 75% of the country’s total land mass.
Senator Shettima, who stated this on Tuesday in Iowa, United States, during the 2023 Norman Borlaug International Dialogue, noted that there were substantial opportunities in Nigeria for local and foreign investors to boost agricultural productivity.

The Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue, also referred to as the “Borlaug Dialogue,” is a gathering of individuals from more than 65 countries fully prepared to address cutting-edge issues related to global food security and nutrition.

Speaking at this year’s edition of the Dialogue with the theme, “Harnessing Change,” the Vice President told the gathering that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s watch, Nigeria has since demonstrated that the Agrifood sector was a top priority.

Delivering his address titled, “Nigeria’s Agribusiness Roadmap for a Prosperous Future,” VP Shettima said, “Our primary objective is to empower our farmers and attract investors. We are increasing primary production to harness the economic potential of agro-processing and industrialisation. This is why, upon assuming office, the President declared a state of emergency in agriculture.

“The connection between food and national security is too significant for us not to be alarmed by happenings around the world, whether in response to unforeseen disasters like the COVID-19 pandemic or the geopolitical frictions around us.”

Restating Nigeria’s firm belief in the power of partnership, the VP explained that it was for this reason that the country had prioritized interventions, which he said present profound economic opportunities for investors.

He listed the interventions to include the National Agriculture Growth Scheme (NAGS), the Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT), the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), the Green Imperative Project (GIP) and the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) programmes.

“Allow me to share that Nigeria understands the essence of partnerships in sustaining the dreams and promises that have brought us together today. This is why we are already collaborating with institutions such as the African Development Bank, the World Bank, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Islamic Development Bank, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to achieve food and nutrition security in Nigeria and beyond.

“With the invaluable support of our partners, we are exploring innovative strategies to transform this quest for food security into a thriving enterprise,” Senator Shettima stated.

The Vice President highlighted critical areas Nigeria was assisting its farmers to increase productivity, including essential infrastructure for industries to increase their capacity.

He said, “With about 70 million hectares of underutilized arable land, which is 75% of our total land area, Nigeria offers a substantial opportunity to both local and foreign investors to boost agricultural productivity. This is why we’ve embraced the TAAT, GIP, and SAPZ programmes and are investing in agricultural research through the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF).

“This is why we are helping our farmers increase production and providing essential infrastructure for industries in peri-urban areas to expand their capacity. This, yes this, is the wisdom for our resolve to establish Mechanization Service Centres in all our 774 Local Government Areas to facilitate essential primary production services.”

He further stated that, while much of the demand for agribusiness products was satisfied through imports, the Tinubu administration is dedicated to reversing Nigeria’s over-reliance on importation.

VP Shettima noted that apart from the fact that its strategic location in West Africa provides easy access to regional and international markets, Nigeria was also poised to dismantle investment barriers.

This, he said, is being achieved through a supportive policy framework such as the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy (NATIP).

He continued: “Because we believe that import rules are a significant factor, we’ve established a policy of zero duties on agricultural machinery and imposed restrictions on certain agricultural commodities to stimulate local production. We are also offering preferential financing and subsidies, exemplified by an agricultural credit guarantee scheme that guarantees up to 75% of loans for agricultural ventures.

“We’ve also introduced a range of tax incentives, including tax holidays, deductions for locally sourced materials, labour incentives, and pioneer status incentives, making it easier to conduct business. Notably, we’ve opened the doors to foreign investors, allowing them to have 100% ownership in companies and repatriate their profits and dividends without hindrance.”

Declaring that Nigeria was ready for agribusiness, the Vice President pointed out that the country was “committed to the journey towards a world where food security and nutrition are not luxuries but fundamental rights for all.”

While introducing VP Shettima earlier, Ambassador Terry Branstad, President of the World Food Prize Foundation and former U.S. Ambassador to China, described the Nigerian Vice President as a rare African statesman whose leadership qualities, loyalty as well as sense of commitment to nationhood and development can best be described as legendary.

He expressed optimism that the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Presidency would be successful given its devotion to results-oriented diplomacy.

Seven EFCC operatives attacked, held hostage by staff and students of the Federal College of Forestry, Idi-shin Estate, Ibadan

 

Seven operatives of the Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on routine verification exercise of a surety: Azeez Kazeem Oluwakemi were, on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, attacked and held hostage by staff and students of the Federal College of Forestry, Idi-shin Estate, Ibadan, Oyo State.

The operatives were in the college to authenticate the address and identity of Oluwakemi, who stood as a surety for Alakinde Khalid Kolawole, a suspected internet fraudster in the custody of the Commission. A surety verification exercise is a standard law enforcement practice for the perfection of bail conditions of a suspect. This fact occasioned the mission of EFCC’s operatives at the college.

For some inscrutable reasons, students and staff of the college went on a frenzy of attacks against operatives of the EFCC, who were on an authorized assignment. This is in spite of the fact that the college community was duly informed about the mission of the EFCC’s team. The college’s Student Union President, in concert with his colleagues and some staff of the institution, reportedly ignited violent confrontation with operatives of the EFCC. Two main entrance gates to the college were barricaded with a car believed to be owned by one of the lecturers of the college. The bus that conveyed operatives to the college was vandalized, even, as students and staff of the college threw stones and dangerous objects at the vehicle. A rescue team that came successfully released the seven operatives held hostage by the riotous crowd.

It is noteworthy that, operatives of the Commission exercised restraint in the face of the unprovoked attack and refrained from applying any force against the belligerent attackers. No student or staff of the college was shot, as armed operatives merely fired into the air to disperse the unruly crowd.

The Commission wishes to assure the public that it will continue to perform its duties in line with its mandate, and unprovoked attacks against personnel of the Commission will no longer be tolerated.

NYSC warns Corps employers and others found to be aiding and abetting absenteeism of Corps members from the national service

 

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Wednesday threatened to apply appropriate sanctions against Corps employers and others found to be aiding and abetting absenteeism and abscondment of Corps members from the national service.

Director, NYSC Northwest area office, Mr. Kehinde Aremu who stated this in his keynote address at the 2023 Corps employers’ workshop in Kaduna noted that with the introduction of biometric verification for both primary and secondary assignments, clearance of Corps members and perpetration of sharp practices have been reduced.

 

Represented by the Deputy Director Operations, Northwest Area Office of NYSC, Abdulkarim Alima the Director added that the management of the Scheme would continue to sanitise the process to eradicate all forms of malpractices in the system.

 

On the area of rejection of Corps members by their prospective employers, he said, as far as Corps rejection is concerned, “NYSC is trying as .much as possible to post Corps members to where their course of study is needed based on request.

 

“We know if a Corps employer requests for Corps members, we know the issue of rejection will not arise. When they are rejected, we repost them to where they are needed.

 

“We are appealing to our Corps employers to be flexible with Corps members. They should look at their welfare in terms of transport and accommodation.

 

“It is the responsibility of Corps employers to accommodate them and in a situation where that is not possible, they pay them in place of that a reasonable amount considering the present economic realities in the Country”, he said.

 

Representative of one of the Corps employers in the State, Deputy Commandant, Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Day Secondary School, Kaduna, Major Ajibola Usman attributed occasional Corps members’ rejection to inadequate facilities to accommodate them in his school.

 

“Usually we accommodate a lot of Corps members. However, as a result of the requirement of institutions like ours, there may be no need for having too many Corps members posted to us at the same time.

 

“In a situation where the school can only take care of 20 Corps members and you are having 40, there will be the need for rejection because you don’t plan for such a number”, he said.

 

Another Corps employer at the event, Mrs. Ganiyat Gafar called for system strengthening rather than calling the scraping of the scheme considering its impact on the Country’s workforce.

 

“The workshop is educative because many of us are just employing Corps members without knowing the nitty-gritty of what it takes. We are going to work on some of the things we were told here.

 

“Corps members have been up and doing. A Corps member from Bayelsa did so much while taking physics in my school and today, he has settled down in Zaria and doing well for himself.

 

“So, NYSC should be strengthened because the scheme is deploying these young Nigerians to unite the Country”, she said.

 

Coordinator of the Scheme in the State, Mr. Hassan Mahmud Taura said the purpose of the workshop was to brainstorm and to arrive at the possible best way to improve the welfare of Corps members in their places of primary assignments.

 

 

Timipre Sylva, Joshua Maciver,  APC excluded from final list of candidates ahead of November 11 governorship election in Bayelsa State

 

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has excluded the name of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timipre Sylva, from the final list of candidates ahead of the November 11 governorship election in Bayelsa State.

 

The amended list which was uploaded on the commission’s website on Tuesday was signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.

 

The column for the names of the APC candidate and his running mate, Joshua Maciver, was left blank with “court order” remarks on it.

 

According to Oriaran-Anthony, the action of the commission was in obedience to court orders on the lists, served on the commission.

Supreme Court gives judgement Thursday on appeals filed by Abubakar Atiku and Peter Obi

 

The Supreme Court has slated Thursday for judgement on the appeals filed by the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Abubakar Atiku, and Labour Party, Peter Obi.

The judgement will lay to rest the legal disputes over the 25 February presidential election.

Atiku and Mr Obi had appealed against the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) which dismissed their petitions challenging the outcome of the 25 February presidential election and affirmed the election of President Bola Tinubu.

The Director of Information of the Supreme Court, Festus Akande, confirmed the information to journalists on Wednesday in Abuja.

 

Court jails Sadiq Mustapha.

The Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, October 23, 2023, secured the conviction and sentencing of one Sadiq Mustapha to one year imprisonment.

He was jailed by Justice Umaru Fadawu of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri, after pleading guilty to one -count amended charge bordering on cheating to the tune of N3, 900.000.00 (Three Million, Nine Hundred Thousand Naira only).

The charge reads: “That you Sadiq Mustapha on or about 10th day of August, 2017, at Maiduguri, within the judicial division of this Honourable Court, did fraudulently induce Yawudi Zarma to deliver to you the sum of Three Million Nine Hundred Thousand Naira, N3, 900, 000.00, under the guise that the said amount represent payment for the purchase of a plot of land covered by grant right of occupancy No. BO/2065/16, Plot No. 7 on BOTP/64, Pompomari Industrial Layout, Maiduguri which you claimed to be the owner and thereby committed an Offence Contrary to Section 320 (a) of the Penal Code Law Cap. 102 Laws of Borno State and Punishable under Section 323 of the same Law.”

The defendant pleaded ‘guilty’ to the charge when it was read to him. In view of his plea, prosecution counsel, A. I Arogha, prayed the court to convict and sentence the defendant accordingly.

Justice Fadawu thereafter sentenced and convicted him to year imprisonment, with an option of fine of N200, 000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira only).

Mustapha’s journey to the Correctional Centre began when he was arrested by operatives of the Maiduguri’s Zonal Command of the EFCC for obtaining the sum of N3.9million from a petitioner as a payment for a plot of land. He neither delivered the land to the buyer nor returned his money to him.

Olukoyede urges EFCC staff to immediately declare their assets in line with civil service regulations and procedures

 

As a bold move towards accountability and internal cleansing, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ola Olukoyede has directed staff of the Commission to immediately declare their assets in line with civil service regulations and procedures.

He gave the directive on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at the Corporate Headquarters of the Commission in Abuja while addressing senior staff of the EFCC. Olukoyede stressed that, fighting corruption required those at the vanguard to be above board.

“All of us are going to declare our assets; from level 17, downward. I did mine, so there’s no reason for anyone to be afraid to do same. Even the Commission Secretary did, you all may also have done it in the past, but there’s need for all of us to do it again. We will declare our assets, and we are going to investigate it. We must live above board by setting the pace with good examples. As anti- corruption fighters, our hands must be clean, so we must declare our assets”, he said.

He called on staff of the Commission to pay more premium attention to the basis of fighting economic and financial crimes, pointing out that, such efforts should be geared towards growing the economy of the nation, creating rightful environment for enhanced investment and strengthening the productive base of the economy. “ We must do our job to add values to the nation. Investors must have confidence in the economy and we must help the country to be governed in an accountable and transparent manner. By doing this, it will offer us a new direction to redeem the image of the nation”, he said.

He also charged staff of the Commission to be professional, thorough in their engagements, rich in integrity and be non-partisan. “Please, I beg you, let’s our hands be clean and put our house in order. Some may not like me, but I am going to do the right thing and treat everybody equally irrespective of religion, ethnicity and region”. He assured staff of better welfare package, enhanced training and equal opportunities to ensure higher productivity. He warned “ those compromising their works and positon to desist from such conduct, as dire consequences await every unsavoury tendency”.

The EFCC boss assured the Commission’s staff that adherence to the rule of law would be an article of faith and defining principle of work. “ The EFCC is a creation of the law. We must do our job in line with the dictates of the law. This is a standard international practice and we would ensure that it is our established norm”, he said.

GOV AKEREDOLU APPROVES 100% HAZARD ALLOWANCE PAYMENT FOR DOCTORS

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,SAN, CON, has approved the payment of 100 percent hazard allowance to medical Doctors on the state government payroll.

The payment of the allowance will take effect from 2nd October, 2023

The Chairman of NMA in Ondo state, Omosehin Adeyemi-Osowe thanked the governor for fulfilling his promise.

He said this will in no small measure make work interesting for the doctors.

According to him, the state government has again demonstrated that it is committed to the welfare of health personnel in the state.

He also enjoined the Governor to as a matter of urgency direct the speed up of the recruitment process of health workers as promised .


President Tinubu Receives ‘Quick Win Report’ on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday in Abuja received the ‘Quick Win Report’ on fiscal policy and tax reforms from the Committee tasked with improving the nation’s revenue profile and business environment.

Responding to a presentation by Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, the President commended their work and assured them of his support for the review and implementation of key recommendations.

”I have listened attentively to your report. Charting the critical path forward for Nigeria’s economic recovery is crucial to all of us. I want to say thank you to your delegation,” he said.

President Tinubu granted the request of the Committee to address a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and apprise cabinet members of their work and expected outcomes to facilitate economic growth.

The President directed Ms. Hadiza Bala Usman, the Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, to coordinate with the relevant government officials for the session.

In his remarks, the Acting Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr. Zacch Adedeji, pledged to ensure the implementation of the recommendations of the Committee, as they may apply, pending the approval of the President.

Mr. Adedeji declared that beyond supporting the fiscal and tax reforms, the FIRS will explore opportunities to diversify the nation’s revenue sources, as the historical overreliance on oil has made the economy vulnerable.

”Nigeria’s fiscal policy serves as the foundation of economic stability. It dictates how the government collects, manages and allocates resources for the betterment of our people. A well-developed fiscal policy is crucial for provision of infrastructure, healthcare, education and social services to our growing population. Tax reforms are an integral part of a robust fiscal policy.

”While our current tax system has contributed significantly to our revenue, there remains room for further enhancement; enhancement that can be driven with digital technology. To achieve this, we are collaborating with the Presidential Committee to streamline our tax laws, improve voluntary compliance, and expand the tax base to ensure equity and fairness,” the Acting FIRS Chairman said.

In his prayers to the President, Mr. Oyedele, among others, called for an emergency economic intervention bill (Executive Bill) and the issuance of Presidential Executive Orders to address the duplication of functions across the public service, and to ensure prudent public financial management in a bid to optimize value from government assets and natural resources.

He listed the interventions to include the National Agriculture Growth Scheme (NAGS), the Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT), the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), the Green Imperative Project (GIP) and the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) programmes.

“Allow me to share that Nigeria understands the essence of partnerships in sustaining the dreams and promises that have brought us together today. This is why we are already collaborating with institutions such as the African Development Bank, the World Bank, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Islamic Development Bank, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to achieve food and nutrition security in Nigeria and beyond.

“With the invaluable support of our partners, we are exploring innovative strategies to transform this quest for food security into a thriving enterprise,” Senator Shettima stated.

The Vice President highlighted critical areas Nigeria was assisting its farmers to increase productivity, including essential infrastructure for industries to increase their capacity.

He said, “With about 70 million hectares of underutilized arable land, which is 75% of our total land area, Nigeria offers a substantial opportunity to both local and foreign investors to boost agricultural productivity. This is why we’ve embraced the TAAT, GIP, and SAPZ programmes and are investing in agricultural research through the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF).

“This is why we are helping our farmers increase production and providing essential infrastructure for industries in peri-urban areas to expand their capacity. This, yes this, is the wisdom for our resolve to establish Mechanization Service Centres in all our 774 Local Government Areas to facilitate essential primary production services.”

He further stated that, while much of the demand for agribusiness products was satisfied through imports, the Tinubu administration is dedicated to reversing Nigeria’s over-reliance on importation.

VP Shettima noted that apart from the fact that its strategic location in West Africa provides easy access to regional and international markets, Nigeria was also poised to dismantle investment barriers.

This, he said, is being achieved through a supportive policy framework such as the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy (NATIP).

He continued: “Because we believe that import rules are a significant factor, we’ve established a policy of zero duties on agricultural machinery and imposed restrictions on certain agricultural commodities to stimulate local production. We are also offering preferential financing and subsidies, exemplified by an agricultural credit guarantee scheme that guarantees up to 75% of loans for agricultural ventures.

“We’ve also introduced a range of tax incentives, including tax holidays, deductions for locally sourced materials, labour incentives, and pioneer status incentives, making it easier to conduct business. Notably, we’ve opened the doors to foreign investors, allowing them to have 100% ownership in companies and repatriate their profits and dividends without hindrance.”

Declaring that Nigeria was ready for agribusiness, the Vice President pointed out that the country was “committed to the journey towards a world where food security and nutrition are not luxuries but fundamental rights for all.”

While introducing VP Shettima earlier, Ambassador Terry Branstad, President of the World Food Prize Foundation and former U.S. Ambassador to China, described the Nigerian Vice President as a rare African statesman whose leadership qualities, loyalty as well as sense of commitment to nationhood and development can best be described as legendary.

He expressed optimism that the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Presidency would be successful given its devotion to results-oriented diplomacy.

Seven EFCC operatives attacked, held hostage by staff and students of the Federal College of Forestry, Idi-shin Estate, Ibadan

 

Seven operatives of the Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on routine verification exercise of a surety: Azeez Kazeem Oluwakemi were, on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, attacked and held hostage by staff and students of the Federal College of Forestry, Idi-shin Estate, Ibadan, Oyo State.

The operatives were in the college to authenticate the address and identity of Oluwakemi, who stood as a surety for Alakinde Khalid Kolawole, a suspected internet fraudster in the custody of the Commission. A surety verification exercise is a standard law enforcement practice for the perfection of bail conditions of a suspect. This fact occasioned the mission of EFCC’s operatives at the college.

For some inscrutable reasons, students and staff of the college went on a frenzy of attacks against operatives of the EFCC, who were on an authorized assignment. This is in spite of the fact that the college community was duly informed about the mission of the EFCC’s team. The college’s Student Union President, in concert with his colleagues and some staff of the institution, reportedly ignited violent confrontation with operatives of the EFCC. Two main entrance gates to the college were barricaded with a car believed to be owned by one of the lecturers of the college. The bus that conveyed operatives to the college was vandalized, even, as students and staff of the college threw stones and dangerous objects at the vehicle. A rescue team that came successfully released the seven operatives held hostage by the riotous crowd.

It is noteworthy that, operatives of the Commission exercised restraint in the face of the unprovoked attack and refrained from applying any force against the belligerent attackers. No student or staff of the college was shot, as armed operatives merely fired into the air to disperse the unruly crowd.

The Commission wishes to assure the public that it will continue to perform its duties in line with its mandate, and unprovoked attacks against personnel of the Commission will no longer be tolerated.

NYSC warns Corps employers and others found to be aiding and abetting absenteeism of Corps members from the national service

 

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Wednesday threatened to apply appropriate sanctions against Corps employers and others found to be aiding and abetting absenteeism and abscondment of Corps members from the national service.

Director, NYSC Northwest area office, Mr. Kehinde Aremu who stated this in his keynote address at the 2023 Corps employers’ workshop in Kaduna noted that with the introduction of biometric verification for both primary and secondary assignments, clearance of Corps members and perpetration of sharp practices have been reduced.

 

Represented by the Deputy Director Operations, Northwest Area Office of NYSC, Abdulkarim Alima the Director added that the management of the Scheme would continue to sanitise the process to eradicate all forms of malpractices in the system.

 

On the area of rejection of Corps members by their prospective employers, he said, as far as Corps rejection is concerned, “NYSC is trying as .much as possible to post Corps members to where their course of study is needed based on request.

 

“We know if a Corps employer requests for Corps members, we know the issue of rejection will not arise. When they are rejected, we repost them to where they are needed.

 

“We are appealing to our Corps employers to be flexible with Corps members. They should look at their welfare in terms of transport and accommodation.

 

“It is the responsibility of Corps employers to accommodate them and in a situation where that is not possible, they pay them in place of that a reasonable amount considering the present economic realities in the Country”, he said.

 

Representative of one of the Corps employers in the State, Deputy Commandant, Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Day Secondary School, Kaduna, Major Ajibola Usman attributed occasional Corps members’ rejection to inadequate facilities to accommodate them in his school.

 

“Usually we accommodate a lot of Corps members. However, as a result of the requirement of institutions like ours, there may be no need for having too many Corps members posted to us at the same time.

 

“In a situation where the school can only take care of 20 Corps members and you are having 40, there will be the need for rejection because you don’t plan for such a number”, he said.

 

Another Corps employer at the event, Mrs. Ganiyat Gafar called for system strengthening rather than calling the scraping of the scheme considering its impact on the Country’s workforce.

 

“The workshop is educative because many of us are just employing Corps members without knowing the nitty-gritty of what it takes. We are going to work on some of the things we were told here.

 

“Corps members have been up and doing. A Corps member from Bayelsa did so much while taking physics in my school and today, he has settled down in Zaria and doing well for himself.

 

“So, NYSC should be strengthened because the scheme is deploying these young Nigerians to unite the Country”, she said.

 

Coordinator of the Scheme in the State, Mr. Hassan Mahmud Taura said the purpose of the workshop was to brainstorm and to arrive at the possible best way to improve the welfare of Corps members in their places of primary assignments.

 

 

Timipre Sylva, Joshua Maciver,  APC excluded from final list of candidates ahead of November 11 governorship election in Bayelsa State

 

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has excluded the name of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timipre Sylva, from the final list of candidates ahead of the November 11 governorship election in Bayelsa State.

 

The amended list which was uploaded on the commission’s website on Tuesday was signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.

 

The column for the names of the APC candidate and his running mate, Joshua Maciver, was left blank with “court order” remarks on it.

 

According to Oriaran-Anthony, the action of the commission was in obedience to court orders on the lists, served on the commission.

Supreme Court gives judgement Thursday on appeals filed by Abubakar Atiku and Peter Obi

 

The Supreme Court has slated Thursday for judgement on the appeals filed by the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Abubakar Atiku, and Labour Party, Peter Obi.

The judgement will lay to rest the legal disputes over the 25 February presidential election.

Atiku and Mr Obi had appealed against the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) which dismissed their petitions challenging the outcome of the 25 February presidential election and affirmed the election of President Bola Tinubu.

The Director of Information of the Supreme Court, Festus Akande, confirmed the information to journalists on Wednesday in Abuja.

 

Court jails Sadiq Mustapha.

The Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, October 23, 2023, secured the conviction and sentencing of one Sadiq Mustapha to one year imprisonment.

He was jailed by Justice Umaru Fadawu of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri, after pleading guilty to one -count amended charge bordering on cheating to the tune of N3, 900.000.00 (Three Million, Nine Hundred Thousand Naira only).

The charge reads: “That you Sadiq Mustapha on or about 10th day of August, 2017, at Maiduguri, within the judicial division of this Honourable Court, did fraudulently induce Yawudi Zarma to deliver to you the sum of Three Million Nine Hundred Thousand Naira, N3, 900, 000.00, under the guise that the said amount represent payment for the purchase of a plot of land covered by grant right of occupancy No. BO/2065/16, Plot No. 7 on BOTP/64, Pompomari Industrial Layout, Maiduguri which you claimed to be the owner and thereby committed an Offence Contrary to Section 320 (a) of the Penal Code Law Cap. 102 Laws of Borno State and Punishable under Section 323 of the same Law.”

The defendant pleaded ‘guilty’ to the charge when it was read to him. In view of his plea, prosecution counsel, A. I Arogha, prayed the court to convict and sentence the defendant accordingly.

Justice Fadawu thereafter sentenced and convicted him to year imprisonment, with an option of fine of N200, 000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira only).

Mustapha’s journey to the Correctional Centre began when he was arrested by operatives of the Maiduguri’s Zonal Command of the EFCC for obtaining the sum of N3.9million from a petitioner as a payment for a plot of land. He neither delivered the land to the buyer nor returned his money to him.

Olukoyede urges EFCC staff to immediately declare their assets in line with civil service regulations and procedures

 

As a bold move towards accountability and internal cleansing, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ola Olukoyede has directed staff of the Commission to immediately declare their assets in line with civil service regulations and procedures.

He gave the directive on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at the Corporate Headquarters of the Commission in Abuja while addressing senior staff of the EFCC. Olukoyede stressed that, fighting corruption required those at the vanguard to be above board.

“All of us are going to declare our assets; from level 17, downward. I did mine, so there’s no reason for anyone to be afraid to do same. Even the Commission Secretary did, you all may also have done it in the past, but there’s need for all of us to do it again. We will declare our assets, and we are going to investigate it. We must live above board by setting the pace with good examples. As anti- corruption fighters, our hands must be clean, so we must declare our assets”, he said.

He called on staff of the Commission to pay more premium attention to the basis of fighting economic and financial crimes, pointing out that, such efforts should be geared towards growing the economy of the nation, creating rightful environment for enhanced investment and strengthening the productive base of the economy. “ We must do our job to add values to the nation. Investors must have confidence in the economy and we must help the country to be governed in an accountable and transparent manner. By doing this, it will offer us a new direction to redeem the image of the nation”, he said.

He also charged staff of the Commission to be professional, thorough in their engagements, rich in integrity and be non-partisan. “Please, I beg you, let’s our hands be clean and put our house in order. Some may not like me, but I am going to do the right thing and treat everybody equally irrespective of religion, ethnicity and region”. He assured staff of better welfare package, enhanced training and equal opportunities to ensure higher productivity. He warned “ those compromising their works and positon to desist from such conduct, as dire consequences await every unsavoury tendency”.

The EFCC boss assured the Commission’s staff that adherence to the rule of law would be an article of faith and defining principle of work. “ The EFCC is a creation of the law. We must do our job in line with the dictates of the law. This is a standard international practice and we would ensure that it is our established norm”, he said.

Chairman of the Southwest Governors’ Forum and Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,SAN, CON, on Tuesday, 24th October, 2023, met with Governors from the region to discuss issues of interest.

The Governors present at the meeting were Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Prince Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Engr. Seyi Makinde of Oyo, and Mr. Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti.

Governor Akeredolu, who appreciated the Governors for their solidarity, harped on continuous collaboration among the Southwest States.

GOV AKEREDOLU APPROVES 100% HAZARD ALLOWANCE PAYMENT FOR DOCTORS

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,SAN, CON, has approved the payment of 100 percent hazard allowance to medical Doctors on the state government payroll.

The payment of the allowance will take effect from 2nd October, 2023

The Chairman of NMA in Ondo state, Omosehin Adeyemi-Osowe thanked the governor for fulfilling his promise.

He said this will in no small measure make work interesting for the doctors.

According to him, the state government has again demonstrated that it is committed to the welfare of health personnel in the state.

He also enjoined the Governor to as a matter of urgency direct the speed up of the recruitment process of health workers as promised .


President Tinubu Receives ‘Quick Win Report’ on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday in Abuja received the ‘Quick Win Report’ on fiscal policy and tax reforms from the Committee tasked with improving the nation’s revenue profile and business environment.

Responding to a presentation by Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, the President commended their work and assured them of his support for the review and implementation of key recommendations.

”I have listened attentively to your report. Charting the critical path forward for Nigeria’s economic recovery is crucial to all of us. I want to say thank you to your delegation,” he said.

President Tinubu granted the request of the Committee to address a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and apprise cabinet members of their work and expected outcomes to facilitate economic growth.

The President directed Ms. Hadiza Bala Usman, the Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, to coordinate with the relevant government officials for the session.

In his remarks, the Acting Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr. Zacch Adedeji, pledged to ensure the implementation of the recommendations of the Committee, as they may apply, pending the approval of the President.

Mr. Adedeji declared that beyond supporting the fiscal and tax reforms, the FIRS will explore opportunities to diversify the nation’s revenue sources, as the historical overreliance on oil has made the economy vulnerable.

”Nigeria’s fiscal policy serves as the foundation of economic stability. It dictates how the government collects, manages and allocates resources for the betterment of our people. A well-developed fiscal policy is crucial for provision of infrastructure, healthcare, education and social services to our growing population. Tax reforms are an integral part of a robust fiscal policy.

”While our current tax system has contributed significantly to our revenue, there remains room for further enhancement; enhancement that can be driven with digital technology. To achieve this, we are collaborating with the Presidential Committee to streamline our tax laws, improve voluntary compliance, and expand the tax base to ensure equity and fairness,” the Acting FIRS Chairman said.

In his prayers to the President, Mr. Oyedele, among others, called for an emergency economic intervention bill (Executive Bill) and the issuance of Presidential Executive Orders to address the duplication of functions across the public service, and to ensure prudent public financial management in a bid to optimize value from government assets and natural resources.
