Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi: One year score card
“Where there is no vision, there is no hope.” – George Washington Carver;
Carver a black American agricultural chemist, agronomist, experimenter and scientist invented more than 300 uses for the peanut. He made the above assertion when he alluded to the connectivity between vision and hope.
Like a twinkle of an eye, the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, in a matter of days will mark one year in office, having been appointed on October 23, 2023.
Industry watchers however have been amazed with his glaring milestones in the space of 365 days, judging from an experience of near-obscurity of the Commission’s creation over 4 decades ago.
THE CLARION CALL
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, made it abundantly clear when he coined the catchphrase for his campaign – Renewed Hope. The choice of ‘Renewed Hope’ as the campaign shibboleth or what is popularly referred to as ‘slogan’ was not an accident, but of a determined mind who was out to give hope to the hopeless, succour to the crestfallen, and relief to the forlornly downtrodden.
Mr. President was intentional about his vision for running for the numero uno seat. It is the more reason he asked that people should not pity him. He asked for the job. And like Theodore Hesburgh, a renowned American priest and academic once said, “The very essence of leadership is that you have to have a vision. It’s got to be a vision you articulate clearly and forcefully on every occasion. You can’t blow an uncertain trumpet.” President Tinubu is determined to rewrite the Nigerian story and put her on a trajectory of progressive hallmark and shared prosperity. This was why he sounded a note of warning to his minister-designates at the outset, and by extension, all his other appointees across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to throw in their letter of resignation if they knew they could not match his vision with measurable milestones in their various offices.
This further implies every appointee who desires on-the-job accolades must not only be seen acting the Renewed Hope mandate in their various areas of responsibilities, but must truly activate steps and mechanisms that will contribute to the overall goal congruence of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) – which is to retool Nigeria in all facets for the good of all Nigerians irrespective of tribe, ethnic bias, religion and/or tongue.
This is in line with the promise of Mr. President during the campaigns. And a clarion calls for Dr. Abdullahi which has hitherto lived up to expectations.
- ABDULLAHI AS A VISIONARY
On resumption of office and in line with Mr. President’s mindset, the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi did not mince words when he averred, in line with the vision and mission of the Commission that; “Under my stewardship and with the support of our dedicated staff and stakeholders, the ECN as the Lead Agency in the country’s push for energy transition will set the tone for economic development based on progressive innovation and policy initiatives as envisioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.”
From his position, it is crystal clear that as the new honcho in charge of the country’s lead agency on energy wherewithal, he is in the Commission with a clear agenda as to give new direction on the energy economy.
He is poised to drive the country’s energy economy from a vista of excellence, industry, results and dedication to national growth and development.
To achieve his set objectives therefore, he rolled out a 5-point agenda from the day he assumed office as the numero uno of the Commission.
These are what his blueprint revolves around and will include;
- Integration of the Renewable and Alternative Energy Policy Structure into the Mainstream National Energy Architecture.
- Immediate facilitation of the actualisation of the Energy Transition Plan
- Facilitation of Research and Development Funding and Partnership Initiatives in the Energy Sector.
- Review of extant Energy Policies, Initiatives and Frameworks to stimulate economic development.
- Facilitation of improved welfare consideration for staff of the Commission commensurate with standards in the Energy Sector.
- ABDULLAHI AS A BRAND AMBASSADOR
Until in recent months, not many Nigerians were aware of the existence of an agency called the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN). Like a man with Midas touch, Dr. Abdullahi brought the Commission to global limelight when he engaged with the United States former Secretary of State, John Kerry and other world leaders at the #COP28UAE where he highlighted his leadership efforts in the area of energy transition.
This one huge notable footprint will remain indelible in the annals of the Energy Commission of Nigeria’s (ECN) history.
The image like never before that the Commission currently enjoys, not only in the country, but also across the globe. Dr. Abdullahi’s efforts at bringing the Commission out of near-obscurity to global prominence is highly commendable.
Aside his outstanding performance at the annual global event, #COP28UAE, Dr. Abdulahi had represented the country in other international events including the G20 Energy Summit in Brasilia, Brazil where he spoke on behalf of Africa, emphasising energy transitions and net-zero emissions, and in Cape Town, South Africa where he presented a paper at the Africa Energy Indaba Summit alongside other global energy experts.
- ABDULLAHI AS A MOVING ENERGISER
If there exists anything Dr. Abdullahi has in common with President Tinubu, it is the hunger for excellence in service delivery or quality leadership deliverables.
The energy Chief Executive knew his job was already cut out for him. For a Commission under The Presidency that had lasted over 4 decades in existence and its near-obscurity in the country’s energy sector. For him, there was no better time than now to make a statement of a complete paradigm shift in the way things were hitherto conducted.
And from his activities in the last one year, Dr. Abdullahi has shown himself as an ‘energiser’ in motion. From providing leadership for West African sub-region and beyond, to leading advocacy on energy transition from fossil fuel in international space, and a resolve to exploring renewable and alternative energy to provide homegrown solutions to the energy needs of the Nigerian people.
As the new Chairman, Nigeria National Committee on World Energy Council (NNC WEC), he had proposed to activate mechanisms with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) geared towards instauration of novel action plans that would not only change the ugly story of the energy economy of the country, but also that of West Africa sub-region and Africa as a whole. He is, at the moment working through tapping opportunities through the West African Power Pool (WAPP), an institution within the ECOWAS to chart a new cause for the energy economy for the country, Africans.
- ABDULLAHI AS A TOTAL WELFARIST
Efficiency often times is a corollary of staff motivation at work place. A value-driven leadership spurs its workforce to efficiency and optimal performance through incentives and conducive working environment. Dr. Abdullahi as a leader with ample experience that cuts across the globe recognises workers’ psyche at work, especially when such workforce is motivated. He understands that remuneration is a major factor in the determination of a worker’s productivity. He is aware of the near-zero motivation and he was prepared to address the situation frontally by making the necessary moves that would ultimately enliven the workers’ spirit and gear them towards the overall success of his leadership at the Commission.
Remuneration
Dr Abdullahi on assumption of office, knowing the importance of good remuneration for members of staff and the role it plays in gearing them to put in their best, activated various steps in making sure that staff’s welfare is put at utmost priority.
In a bid to actualize this, he established contacts with members of the National Assembly, Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission on possible wage review.
CAPACITY BUILDING
The Energy expert recognises the value of Human Capital Development in driving positive change. He understands the Commission is largely knowledge-driven.
Therefore, another milestone he has recorded in a space of few months was to ensure workers undergo serious trainings and re-trainings to enhance their capacity with overall effect on their productivity.
Dr. Abdullahi was able to secure two fully-funded PhD foreign scholarships (UK) from the Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF) for two (2) of the Commission’s members of staff. Also, he secured three (3) Masters degree scholarships (Japan) to members of staff through JICA.
He believes such opportunity will not only motivate other staff, but also increase brain gain in the Commission when such staff return to contribute their quota.
LAYING FOUNDATION FOR ENERGY PROSPERITY
Barely 7 months after his assumption of office, precisely on May 8, 2024, the ECN numero uno unveiled a twin document on National Energy Policy (NEP) and National Energy Master Plan (NEMP). The first time in the Commission’s over 40 years of existence. The event which held at the Main Auditorium of the Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF) building had in attendance critical stakeholders from the Energy sector including Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Heads of Government Agencies and Private Sector Practitioners and the Special Adviser to Mr. President on Energy, Ms. Olubukola Arowolo Verheijen who did the unveiling.
The 2 documents would go on to provide foundation and pathway for the country’s energy development.
IN PUBLIC INTEREST
Wood Stove, Safer Environment
As a responsive leader who is committed to a safer environment as entrenched in his mandate, Dr. Abdullahi’s leadership pioneered the Commission’s Clean Cooking advocacy with presentation of clean cooking wood stoves to the Nigerian public. This was part of his commitment during the #COP28UAE where he delivered a masterpiece as a representative of President Bola Tinubu to enlist the country on the #CleanCoolingPledge at the gathering of over 70,000 world leaders.
Barely 4 months after the event, he launched the Clean Cooking Wood Stove Initiative in line with this global pledge. The pilot scheme held at Kurudu, Mararaba, Nasarawa State saw wood stoves with low emissions distributed to women. The initiative is to ultimately guarantee a safer environment, especially in the country’s hinterlands.
Alternative Energy Through Photovoltaic (PV) Electricity
On Saturday, July 27, 2024, the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) under Dr. Abdullahi performed a groundbreaking ceremony of Assembly Plant construction at Ihunekwagu Autonomous Community, Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State. The event came up as a corollary of the need to boost access to affordable electricity in the country, and to take several communities off the national grid.
In addressing the electricity menace therefore, the visionary Chief Executive of the Energy Commission saw an opportunity in photovoltaic (PV) electricity to provide alternative energy to millions of households. Hence, consolidating the Renewed Hope agenda of Mr. President. Such solar PV module assembling plant which will provide sustainable, reliable, and decentralized power source capable of reaching the remotest part of the country – thereby giving light and hope to Nigerians.
Renewable Energy College
Dr. Abdullahi’s leadership on Saturday, August 10, 2024 scored another record breaking milestone with groundbreaking ceremony of Barefoot Renewable Energy College (BRE College), Osara, Kogi State. The concept of a Renewable Energy College was in line with the manifesto of President Tinubu whose part agenda is to explore various energy potential of the country.
The college is a leap further into transitioning from fossil-based energy resources to renewable energy. The Barefoot Renewable Energy College was conceptualised to bridge the energy manpower gap, drive innovation, competence, and self-reliance in the renewable energy sector. The future is assured with a safer environment and a cleaner energy.
SYNERGY/COLLABORATION FOR DEVELOPMENT
The Energy Commission boss, in furtherance of his mandate, as the lead agency in the country’s energy pursuits, to leapfrog the Commission for optimal performance in its responsibilities did enter into synergy and collaboration with a number of development partners, international organisations as well as relevant and critical stakeholders. Prominent among these efforts include;
- The United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP) and Clean Cooling Collaborative (CCC) on Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) in the area of air conditioners that aims to reduce carbon emissions, thereby leading to safer environment.
- Signing up a tripartite wind energy agreement at the #COP28UAE held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates with the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and the Niger State Government.
- Teaming up with the United Kingdom’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) for energy planning workshop.
- Collaboration with DEWA and the European Union (EU) delegation on energy transition initiative of his leadership at the Commission.
- Capacity building of the Commission’s staff with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
- Entered into partnership agreement with the National Biomass Ethanol Programme (NBEP) amongst others.
As we celebrate this young Nigerian for his verifiable leadership milestones and footprints in a space of one year of assumption of office, it is equally germane that it is worth placing on record that Dr. Abdullahi will lead and coordinate the record breaking Nigeria-Germany $130billion Global Hydrogen Project from the Office of the Vice President of the Federal Republic. Such pedestal does not come on a platter of gold, but of capacity, competence and trust in this jewel from the savannah.
For now and even years to come, the man, Dr. Abdullahi does not look like somebody who is backing down. For him, the task of helping Mr. President achieve his aim of reworking and retooling Nigeria for Nigerians is a cause that cannot be compromised.
And there is no stopping. Not now, not anytime soon.

May 29: Last One Year Most Challenging in Nigeria’s History – PDP
…Tasks President Tinubu to Prioritize Governance, Address Corruption, Fuel Crisis, Others
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after a thorough review of the worsening state of affairs of the nation in the last one year under the current All Progressives Congress (APC) administration declares the period as the most challenging in Nigeria’s history since the Civil War.
The PDP insists that the current rising insecurity, excruciating poverty, economic hardship and general despondency in the country necessitating the fleeing of thousands of Nigerians especially the youths from our nation further confirm that there is no hope in sight with the APC on the saddle.
It is apparent that inflicting pain and misery on Nigerians remains the policy thrust of successive APC administrations which became heightened by the not well thought-out twin anti-people policies of removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the Naira without due consideration for the citizens’ welfare and security.
As if these were not enough, the APC administration continues in its anti-people policies in the arbitrary hike in electricity tariff and imposition of multiple taxes on the already impoverished Nigerians with no corresponding tangible development directed towards the welfare of the people.
The consequences of these ill-thought and ill-implemented policies without any cushioning measures to mitigate the resultant rising cost and associated hardship on the masses have driven many into early death and extreme poverty.
The APC’s continuing use of poverty as a weapon of mass destruction is responsible for the wide spread despondency in the country where people are only preoccupied with survival rather than show interest in the government policies and activities which largely alienate them.
It is shocking that while the Federal Government announced the removal of fuel subsidy forcing Nigerians to pay more for fuel, trillions of naira is still being reportedly paid as fuel subsidy allegedly into private bank accounts associated with corrupt APC leaders.
Sadly, the APC in its insensitivity and disregard for the people has not bordered to render an account to Nigerians with respect to the expected savings accruable to the Federation Account as a result of the announced fuel subsidy removal.
Instead of addressing the grave economic challenges facing our nation, the APC administration continues to wreck our productive sectors with its ill-advised policies which have resulted in the exit of multinational giants including GlaxoSmithKline, Procter and Gamble, Microsoft among others and massive divestment by major oil and gas companies from our country in the last one year.
The consequence of these is massive loss of jobs and businesses with attendant socio-economic dislocation and uncertainty. This is compounded by the over 37% unemployment rate, inflation rate of over 33% and over 200% devaluation of the Naira in the last one year.
It is not therefore surprising that Nigerians have completely lost hope in the APC administration which has no operable economic plan to navigate our country out of the present despair.
More distressing is that on the security front, the APC has merely paid lip service to the security of lives and property of Nigerians with massive killings, kidnapping and marauding of communities by bandits and terrorists raging across the country.
Since May 29, 2023, over 5000 Nigerians have been reportedly killed with many more abducted in various parts of our country with no concrete measure by the APC administration to arrest this ugly trend.
From reports on governance at the sub-national levels across the country, it is clear that the only hope for our nation is the performance of governors elected on platform of the PDP who continue to deliver life-enhancing citizen empowerment, human capital and infrastructural development projects with positive effect on the wellbeing of the people.
Our Party therefore urges President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to use the occasion of his one year in office to have a deep reflection on the state of the nation under his watch; take a critical look at his policies and present a clear economic roadmap which will enhance the welfare of the Nigerian people. He should also address the allegation of corruption and profligacy in the administration.
The PDP commends Nigerians for their steadfastness and urges them not to allow the failures of the APC administration to make them lose hope in Democracy and the Nation.

Initiatives like the Dry Season Farming Initiative and the Green Imperative Programme aim to promote year-round farming and provide farmers with access to modern equipment and low-interest loans, ensuring a stable food supply.
Unlocking Energy and Natural Resources: The Renewed Hope Agenda focuses on developing renewable energy sources and enhancing the efficiency of the oil and gas sector. Policy directives have improved the investment climate, increased crude oil and NLNG production, and initiated significant projects like rehabilitating the Port Harcourt refinery and constructing the Ajaokuta-Abuja-Kano Gas Pipeline.
Transforming Infrastructure and Transportation: Significant investments in infrastructure are underway, including operationalising the Port Harcourt-Aba rail line and constructing the Lagos-Calabar Super Highway. The Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund aims to raise N20 trillion to deliver critical projects and modernise ports and aviation facilities, creating an enabling environment for businesses.
Improving Education, Health, and Social Investment: The administration is expanding primary health centres and upgrading tertiary hospitals, ensuring better access to healthcare. The Student Loans Act 2024 and the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund highlight a commitment to broadening access to education. Social welfare schemes, including cash transfers and microcredit programmes, aim to uplift vulnerable households and support small businesses.
Accelerated Diversification through Youth-Driven Industrialization, Digitization, and Innovation: Recognising the youth as invaluable assets, the administration has launched initiatives like the Three Million Technical Talent Initiative and the iDICE Programme to empower young Nigerians with digital skills. The National Job Centre and the National Talent Programme aim to create employment opportunities and support youth-owned enterprises.
Improved Governance for Effective Service Delivery: To enhance service delivery, the administration has introduced the MOBILIZER app for citizen engagement and launched the Citizens’ Delivery Tracker App to assess public officials’ performance. Reforms recommended by the Oronsaye Report aim to rationalise and restructure government agencies, increasing transparency and efficiency.
Conclusion: The Renewed Hope Agenda is a comprehensive strategy driving Nigeria towards sustainable development and improved quality of life. President Tinubu’s administration is laying the foundation for lasting progress and a brighter future for all Nigerians through strategic investments, youth empowerment, and improved governance.

PRESIDENT TINUBU TO EXXONMOBIL EXECUTIVES: EXECUTIVE ORDERS ON OIL AND GAS REFORMS WILL MAKE NIGERIA GLOBALLY COMPETITIVE
President Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday in Abuja, said the three Executive Orders on oil and gas reforms, which he signed, will make Nigeria’s petroleum sector globally competitive.
The President made the affirmation during a meeting with a delegation from ExxonMobil Upstream Company, led by its President, Liam Mallon.
He emphasized that these reforms will ensure that no oil company faces undue challenges in the country.
The three Executive Orders, which became effective from February 28, 2024, are: Oil and Gas Companies (Tax Incentives, Exemption, Remission, etc.) Order, 2024; Presidential Directive on Local Content Compliance Requirements, 2024; and the Presidential Directive on Reduction of Petroleum Sector Contracting Costs and Timelines.
President Tinubu also assured the ExxonMobil delegation that the federal government is committed to resolving the divestment issues between the company and Seplat Energy, which are currently under litigation.
“We have been pushing for closure on divestment issues, and I believe the other party, Seplat, is open to this,” the President said.
The President commended the company for its show of commitment to environmental protection in Nigeria, noting its efforts in reducing gas flaring in the country.
“Nigeria is going through a lot of reforms, and we have been navigating the leadership quarters carefully to ensure that we achieve a win-win situation for all parties and attract more investments,” President Tinubu said.
The President described ExxonMobil as a worthy partner in Nigeria’s development over the decades and urged the company to remain committed to contributing to the success of his administration.
“We are close enough to be fair and blunt with you, and we are not afraid to hear from you on better options and recommendations for the growth of the industry in Nigeria,” the President said.
The meeting, also attended by Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), and Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), discussed issues such as divestment, decommissioning, and abandonment as regards the company.
“Mr. President has given a clear directive to the NNPC GCEO and I to resolve the issue of divestment, and we are doing whatever we can to achieve that,” Lokpobiri stated.
On decommissioning and abandonment in the oil industry, Lokpobiri noted that the ministry is addressing the matter in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and global best practices.
“The reforms driven by the three Executive Orders will ensure that companies operating in Nigeria have the best environment to continue making their investments and that no company will seek to leave Nigeria,” the Minister said.
Liam Mallon, the President of ExxonMobil Upstream Company, expressed his appreciation for the support and reassurances provided by the Nigerian government and pledged the company’s long-term commitment to the country’s energy sector.
He also commended President Tinubu for his courage and conviction to undertake bold reforms within his first year in office.

Natufe to Tinubu: It makes no sense to concentrate Nigeria’s import-export business in Lagos seaports
- Says Sapele seaport completely abandoned, Calabar, Koko, Port Harcourt, and Warri seaports left to rot, and severely underutilized
- Describes performance of Okpe politicians as poor
- Tells Oborevwori, Dafinone, other Delta top government officials what to do
President General of Okpe Union, Prof Igho Natufe has expressed concern about the concentration of seaports in Lagos.
‘’From the perspective of the Okpe Nation and the Niger Delta region, the concentration of seaports around Lagos grants overwhelming power to the Yoruba and the entire South West region of Nigeria’’.
Natufe spoke at the 94th anniversary of the Okpe Union in Lagos.
‘’It is baffling that imports from Asian countries are directed to Lagos ports, when Calabar, Port Harcourt, Sapele, and Warri seaports are closer to Asia than Lagos. This phenomenon clearly demonstrates an over balance of power problematic which we need to address in Nigeria, if restructuring is to be taken seriously’’.
He charged President Bola Tinubu to revive Sapele, Calabar, Koko, Port Harcourt, and Warri ports.
‘’Sapele seaport, a natural seaport, which was second to Lagos before the military coup of January 15, 1966, has been completely abandoned, while Calabar, Koko, Port Harcourt, and Warri seaports have been left to rot, and severely underutilized.
He lamented the concentration of seaports in the South-West geo-political zone.
‘’While political leaders of the Yoruba Nation have used their access to power to monopolize the concentration of seaports in their region, it must be stressed that this monopoly has caused a grave disequilibrium in access to power on the distribution of seaports in the Niger Delta region, including the Sapele seaport. It makes no sense to concentrate Nigeria’s import-export business in only the Lagos seaports.
The renowned scholar, activist and author described the performance of Okpe politicians as poor.
‘’It must be acknowledged that, since the establishment of Delta State in 1991, Okpe political leaders have performed very poorly in attracting businesses to Okpe Nation. Their access to power has not led to infrastructural development in Okpe Nation, compared for example, the achievements of Isoko political leaders in Isoko Nation. In fact, the Isoko Nation has debunked the argument that you need a governor of your ethnic nationality to develop your region. The Isoko political and traditional leaders conscientiously utilize their access to power to benefit their constituencies while, sadly, their Okpe counterparts are primarily concerned about their respective pockets’’
He listed the plans of the Okpe Union towards repositioning the Okpe Nation. .
‘’Okpe Union shall continue its advocacy of investments in Okpe Nation, including reaching out to the Delta State Government on this important subject. We shall intensify our lobbying of both the Federal and State governments to ensure the revival of Sapele seaport and the attraction of industries to Okpe Nation. We shall utilize the extensive experience of Okpe nationals, especially those in the Diaspora, to identify prospective investors to invest in Okpe Nation, under the framework of a public-private partnership (PPP)’’
To address the worrisome situation in Delta State, Natufe urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to improve the infrastructural deficits in Delta State, especially in Okpe Nation, make the environment attractive to foreign and domestic investors.
‘’An environment where an investor has to provide electricity, water, and good roads is hardly conducive for economic growth and development’’.
He underscored that Okpe Union must continue to instil positive change in Okpe Nation, by liaising with other Okpe organizations on the strategies for development.
The former university don also spoke on banditry, terrorism and kidnapping.
‘’The fragility of the Nigerian state is aggravated by the insecurity in the country. We call on the federal government to take immediate actions to evacuate Fulani herdsmen, bandits and terrorists from the territories of the indigenous ethnic nationalities across Nigeria. While we advocate for the unity of Nigeria, we strongly believe that the unity can only be strengthened if it is anchored on the principles of justice, fairness and equity, serving the interests of the indigenous ethnic nationalities in the country’’.
He mentioned other ways of addressing the country’s challenges.
‘’We are facing an existential crisis in Nigeria. A resolution of this crisis requires inputs from all indigenous ethnic nationalities at a round table conference, if the National Assembly proves incapable of producing a renewed federalism of the 1963 variant. If not properly handled, the current crisis can lead to unwanted confrontations between ethnic nationalities with severe consequences for Nigeria. It is on record that the Hausas have given the Fulanis an ultimatum to vacate their territories’’.
Natufe also expressed the commitment of the Okpe Nation to work with other ethnic nationalities in restructuring the Nigerian edifice to guarantee the safety of all indigenous ethnic nationalities, on the basis of justice, fairness and equity.
‘’We, Okpe, have no secessionist intentions. But, we recognize that the Nigerian edifice is cracked and haemorrhaging. We are committed to working with other ethnic nationalities in restructuring the Nigerian edifice to guarantee the safety of all indigenous ethnic nationalities, on the basis of justice, fairness and equity, where our rights are recognized and protected under a renewed federal constitution. However, if by omission or commission, the Nigerian edifice disintegrates, we pray it is via the velvet model of Czechoslovakia and not via the Yugoslav variant’’.

Commissioning of Emohua- Kalabari Road: Julius Berger very understanding, patriotic, says Rivers State Governor
. As excited residents hail construction company
Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara has hailed Nigeria’s leading engineering construction company as a very understanding company that has been committed to the development of infrastructure in the state, and indeed the country.
The governor spoke during the historic commissioning of the Emohua-Kalabari road constructed by the company weekend.
Reacting to remarks by the Deputy Regional Manager of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Mr. Rimon Marisho, the Governor said, the company’s representative may have deliberately refused to state the obvious on the cost of the contract because of the understanding the company has shown in all their undertakings across the state.
He said, let me also say it here, maybe, Julius Berger Nigeria PLC was being economical with their presentation. On my table as I am talking to you, there is a request for variation of the cost of this project.
This is because, as at the time this project was awarded, and while the project was on-going, there were serious exchange rate differences. But I told them not to worry that they should go ahead and complete this project, and I assured them that we will sort them out and they accepted.
Amidst overwhelming ovation for the company, the governor added that the position the company took on the matter showed patriotism worthy of emulation by other companies working for government.
Earlier in his presentation, Morisho, said the Emohua-Abalama-Tema Junction Road project was awarded to the company in February, 2023, with a completion period of 18 months.
He continued: because of our company’s commitment to meeting contractual obligations, we ensured delivery of the project in good quality and ahead of schedule.
He added: Julius Berger is proud to have contributed significantly to the development of infrastructure in this region, and we are grateful to Governor Fubara for the opportunity, including the trust reposed in them to be part of his success story.
Commenting on the project, Governor Fubara said it was awarded on February 18, 2023, by the immediate past administration at the cost of N21.2 billion but only paid N6 billion.
Governor Fubara stated that his administration paid the remainder of N15.2 billion and completed 70 percent of the job to confidently claim it as part of his projects delivered for the good of the people in Kalabari land.
So, let me thank the four local government areas which co-operated to make this project a success: Emohua, Asari-Toru, Degema and Akuku-Toru. And let me also thank the traditional leadership of the Kalabari Kingdom, please just be peaceful, everything that we desire, by the special grace of God, will definitely come our way, he further said
In his short presentation, the Permanent Secretary of Rivers State Ministry of Works, Atemea Briggs, said the Emohua-Kalabari Road is 15.24 kilometres in length, and was awarded at the cost of N21.26 billion by the previous administration, which paid only 28 percent of that sum, which amounted to N6 billion with work left at preliminary stage.
Briggs said other features of the road that is serving as major access into Kalabari land include its width as 5.3 meters, with asphalt thickness of 100 millimeters – made up of 60 millimeters concrete asphaltic binder course and 40 millimeters asphaltic wearing course, with a median divide of 600 millimeters and installed street light, now completed and fully paid.
In her welcome address, the Vice Chairman of Asari-Toru Local Government Area, Mrs Tekena Daphne Wokoma, recalled that the road, which was properly constructed with bridges first in the 1990s, eventually collapsed few years after.

PRESS RELEASE
‘WE’VE LOST OUR FINEST PUBLIC SERVANT IN LAGOS’ — SANWO-OLU PAYS MOVING TRIBUTE TO HIS LATE DEPUTY COS
- Accolades, testimonies as LASG holds Night of Tribute for Soyannwo
- ‘He was the revolving door for our Govt’ — State EXCO
Testimonies poured out in torrents for the late Deputy Chief of Staff (DCoS) to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Gboyega Olumade Soyannwo, as colleagues, friends and relatives gathered, on Tuesday, at a Night of Tributes to share memories of their moments and encounters with him.
The accolades, profound accounts of the deceased’s professional conducts and virtue of his generosity shared by those who had encounters with the deceased literally became the consoling legacy left for the bereaved family, just as the good testimonies dispersed the pall of grief that had enveloped Alausa — the seat of the Lagos State Government — since the passing of the State’s Executive Council member.
Soyannwo, 55, breathed his last on May 15, after a brief illness. He is survived by wife and two children.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, his Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, led members of the State Executive Council, members of the State’s legislature and the judiciary to the Night of Tribute held at Alausa Sports Ground, as part of the funeral programmes organised for the deceased.
Sanwo-Olu, in an emotive tone, described the late Sayannwo as the “rallying point” in the Governor’s Office, extolling the deceased’s commitment and his dedication to any cause to which he had conviction.
The Governor, who said Soyannwo’s death was a personal loss to him, revealed that he and the deceased had been together for 20 years, as they both had their stints in the banking sector, before moving to Government together.
Sanwo-Olu recalled that the late Soyannwo was the first staff in his team immediately he declared his intention to run for governor, noting that the deceased showed up in his house 24 hours after with a well thought-out strategy to go about party primaries.
The Governor said: “From the moment I was sworn in till today, Gboyega had made me a better manager than I was. He helped me to be a better Governor. He managed my daily itinerary and understood what the job entails. For once in the last five years when I appointed him as my Deputy Chief of Staff, I never had the cause to raise my voice at him because he fully understood the dynamics and tedious tasks of his office. He was the rallying point of my office.
“Gboyega made indelible impacts in the lives of each and every one of us. In the classes of the past and current cabinet, we have just lost our strongest confidant and a true bridge builder. Gboyega would call me 33 times in 25 minutes and each call would be quick to get my final approval for tasks listed in my itinerary. I’ve lost a great friend, brother and cherished colleague. Lagos has lost one of its finest public servants. I will forever be thankful to God for making our paths cross.”
Sanwo-Olu said the late Soyannwo was “fiercely loyal” and never coloured his official duties with friendship throughout his career.
The Governor said smooth organisation was not only the late Soyannwo’s main skill which stood him out as a professional banker.
“Give him a very difficult spreadsheet to analyse or transactions that anyone has no idea to unravel, Gboyega would resolve it in a simplified way. That’s how he started in banking industry,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He continued: “I certainly will not be here to mourn Gboyega’s death, but to celebrate his life and legacy left behind in service of our great country. He has done more than anyone can expect of a 55-year-old. He showed us there is reward for hard work. Gboyega taught all of us how to live well and make lasting impact on humanity.”
Dr. Hamzat recalled his first meeting with the late Soyannwo in 2018 ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries, pointing out that the deceased was a man who was careful with promises.
The Deputy Governor said the late DCoS never used any word carelessly, noting that his words were his bond.
“Any agreement reached with DCoS is cast in stone, he would never shift ground on agreed terms,” Dr. Hamzat noted.
Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mrs Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, broke down in tears, as she made a moving tribute on behalf of the Executive Council members, describing the late Soyannwo’s death as “painful loss”.
She said the late Deputy Chief of Staff was the revolving door of the Sanwo-Olu administration that interfaced with all ranks and streamlined the governance process for smooth flow of Government’s programmes.
“DCoS was a team player for the good of our principal. His ability to inspire and galvanise others for result-oriented actions was unparalleled. He left an indelible mark on our administration and the State. The Executive Council will miss his intellectual contribution, his camaraderie and sense of humour. As we bid farewell to our departed brother, we take solace in the memories we shared together as one family,” Salu-Hundeyin said.
Chief of Staff, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, eulogised his deputy, noting the late Soyannwo left at the time he had so much to offer to humanity.
“He was a dedicated, meticulous and committed public servant who was always passionate to serve the people. His loyalty was total and he never chickened out of agreed decisions,” Ayinde said.
Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, who attended the same primary school with the deceased, recalled the late Soyannwo’s astuteness and problem-solving ability since their days as schoolchildren.
“The late Gboyega would not look out for himself alone; he would look out for others and take their wellbeing personally. He was a gifted and extraordinary problem solver. If you share any problem with DCoS, he would properly analyse it for you as if he initiated the problem and he would proffer two solutions, not one.”

AN OPEN LETTER TO OKPE STAKEHOLDERS ON THE SCHISM BETWEEN THE ORODJE OF OKPE AND THE OKPE UNION: TIME FOR OKPE TO UNITE FOR DEVELOPMENT BY PROF. O. IGHO NATUFE, PRESIDENT GENERAL, OKPE UNION (WORLD WIDE)
*MAY 8, 2024.*
Dear Esteemed Okpe Leaders,
I am coming to you on behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Okpe Union, and members of the Union in Nigeria and the Diaspora. The purpose of this Open Letter is to seek your intervention in the ongoing schism between HRM Orhue l, Orodje of Okpe, and the democratically elected leadership of the Okpe Union. Some of you may be familiar with certain portions of this Open Letter, whose inclusion is for the benefit of those seeing them for the first time.
As is well known by all of you, the Okpe Union was established by a group of young Okpe nationals based in Lagos, on May 16, 1930. It is the oldest registered ethnic nationality organization in Nigeria. Thanks to the Okpe Union, the Okpe Kingdom in the modern era was resuscitated in 1945. From its inception in 1930, the Okpe Union launched a campaign for the restoration of the Okpe Kingdom, irrespective of the opposition of several influential Okpe leaders who were apprehensive about the likelihood of our having another dictatorship akin to the rule of HRM Esezi l. It was not until 1943 that these apprehensive Okpe leaders acquiesced to the demands of the Okpe Union for the resuscitation of the Okpe monarchy, after the Sapele land case which got to the West African Court of Appeal (WACA). It is an incontrovertible fact that the Okpe Union birthed the Okpe Kingdom in the modern era that produced HRM Esezi ll (1945 – 1966); HRM Orhoro l (1972-2004); and HRM Orhue l (2006 – present). Thanks to the Okpe Union, the Okpe Monarchy was restored in January 1945 after an interregnum of almost 200 years. Since its inception the Okpe Union has played and continues to play vital role in the socio-economic and political development of the Okpe Nation. It is the umbrella organization and mouth piece of the Okpe people. Its role at the coronation of HRM Orhue l is well documented.
*Introduction.*
The Okpe Union is a membership based organization with a Constitution that defines its administration and autonomy. It relies on membership dues, fees, and donations to execute its projects for the benefit of the Okpe Nation. The Okpe Union has provided a voice for the Okpe Nation in the comity of ethnic nationalities in Delta State and in Nigeria.
Like most organizations, the Constitution of the Okpe Union contains mechanisms for conflict resolution, without the interference of a non-member. Though the Orodje of Okpe is considered a Patron of the Okpe Union by tradition, he possesses neither the power nor authority to interfere in or seize the administration of the Okpe Union. This has been the recognized rule observed by all Orodjes since 1945, including HRM Orhue l, until the latter purportedly dissolved the democratically elected NEC of the Okpe Union led by Okakuro Robert Onome on October 3, 2020, and appointed an illegal interim national executive of 9 members, led by Prof. Emurobome Idolor. It is significant to note that the purported dissolution occurred barely 42 days to the Annual General Assembly, as scheduled by NEC, to take place on November 14, 2020 at the Okpe Hall, Sapele. The Palace instructed the leadership of the Sapele Okpe Community to deny the Okpe Union access to the Okpe Hall.
*Attempts at a Peaceful Resolution.*
Before the election of the current NEC on May 15, 2021, which I am privileged to lead, and since then, NEC has engaged in the search for peace on several occasions.
- Hon. Okakuro James Augoye, then the Delta State Commissioner of Works, initiated a reconciliation committee to resolve the crisis. In its submission to the Orodje, his committee recommended the recognition of the democratically elected NEC and the dissolution of the Interim Executive Committee led by Prof. Idolor.
- The Udogun Okpe Committee headed by Okakuro Barr. Isaacs Itebu replicated the recommendation of the Augoye reconciliation committee but however recommended fines against members of the Okpe Union NEC and some specific officials for their utterances during the crises.
- The Okpe Peace Reconciliation Committee led by Rev. Dr. Charles Osume also arrived at the same recommendation as the above two committees. Members of the Okpe Peace Reconciliation Committee included Rev. Dr. Charles Osume (Chairman), the late Prof. Ovaborhene Idamoyibo (Secretary), Okakuro Moses Asini, Mr. Moses Akpobasah, Ms. Dora Omuvwie, Prof. Hope Eghagha, and Mr. Phillip Mebradu.
- Okakuro Barr. Charles Obule also initiated a peace move in June-July 2022. Okakuro Prof. S. Ejite Oyovbaire and Okakuro Paulinus Akpeki represented the Palace. Other participants were Messrs. Iroro Clark and Igho Akeregha, Dr. Lucky Akpere and Barr. Ehensiri Akpederin.
- It is pertinent to note that, immediately after the election of the current NEC on May 15, 2021, we wrote to the Orodje informing him about the successful Election General Assembly attended by delegates from all the Branches of the Okpe Union, and the election of the new National Executive Council. In the letter we sought his permission to grant us an audience at his earliest convenience for us to pay him a courtesy visit, introduce the new NEC, and apologize for any infractions we might have caused him. We also expressed our readiness and willingness to pay any possible fines he or the Udogun Okpe might levy against us. Our request was rejected.
Prior to the intervention of the Rev. Dr. Osume-led Okpe Peace Reconciliation Committee in the search for peace, NEC had gone to court in Sapele praying the Court to restrain members of the Orodje-imposed Interim Executive Committee and its agents from parading themselves as leaders of the Okpe Union. When Rev. Dr. Osume intimated us about his committee’s peace mission, he requested that we withdrew the case from court so as to give peace a chance. We obliged and withdrew the case accordingly. However, immediately we withdrew the case from court, the Palace wrote to the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) requesting them to recognize the illegal Interim Executive Committee. This was a plot to oust the democratically elected NEC from CAC recognition. It was therefore obvious that the intention of the Orodje-imposed illegal Interim Executive Committee was not to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict but to gain time in its treacherous move to get CAC to de-recognise the democratically elected NEC and the legitimate Okpe Union leadership. Faced with this treachery, and having before us a subsisting resolution of the General Assembly of the Okpe Union that the NEC should seek legal redress if mediation fails, we elected to lodge a suit at a Federal High Court in Lagos. HRM Orhue l, the Prof. Idolor-led Interim Executive Committee and the CAC were served as joint defendants in the case.
To demonstrate the insincerity of the Orodje-imposed committee in respecting the court process, they obtained a court order in Abuja to appoint an illegal Board of Trustees, without disclosing to the Abuja Federal High Court that they were already defendants in a Lagos Federal High Court on the same subject. Furthermore, we had already lodged an application at the Lagos Federal High Court with a similar prayer much earlier known to the CAC, the Orodje and the illegal Interim Executive Committee. They surreptitiously acquired a new certificate of incorporation for the Okpe Union with the Board of Trustees which they got through the back door; an issue that we dealt with immediately.
Regarding our substantive case that was lodged in the Federal High Court, Lagos, the Judge, on January 19, 2023, declared the imposed interim Executive Council led by Prof. Emurobome Idolor illegal and ordered a perpetual injunction restraining them, their privies and those who derive any powers from them from acting or parading themselves as the national leadership of the Okpe Union. The Judgement affirmed the autonomy of the Okpe Union, and declared that the Orodje has no authority to interfere in the administration of the Okpe Union.
On April 30, 2024, the Federal High Court, Abuja vacated its earlier order granted to the illegal Interim executive of the Okpe Union to appoint its Board of Trustees, that organized the election of Okakuro Joseph Aboze’s illegal executive that succeeded Prof. Idolor’s illegal interim executive. The ruling of the Federal High Court in Abuja effectively nullified the pretence of the Okakuro Aboze led illegal executive committee. We recognize the lamentation of Okakuro Aboze and his cohorts, when he disclosed at the Okakuro Oghenevworo Jemikalajah Peace Meeting of August 9, 2023, that his illegal executive had presented to the Palace their resolution that they would abide by the judgement of the Federal High Court, Lagos of January 19, 2023, and step aside, which the Orodje rejected by promising them that the Palace had the resources to pursue an appeal to its logical conclusion. We question the strategic intent of the Palace to want to elongate the court process instead of lending support to the Okpe Union in building a united Okpe Nation to benefit the Okpe people.
*Consequences of Continued Schism.*
Okpe Nation is renowned as an organised and law abiding people. A disregard for the Rule of Law is injurious to the socio-economic and political development of any society, including the Okpe Nation. This can lead to a break-down of law and order and intra-communal confrontations.
This schism has halted the implementation of several projects designed to benefit Okpe nationals and Okpe Nation. It has also diminished the status of Okpe Nation in the comity of ethnic nationalities in Delta State and in Nigeria. The proclamation of Okpe as the most populous monolithic nationality in Delta State is rendered obsolete without a powerful Okpe Union to articulate and defend Okpe interests at state and national levels. Okpe Identity is the obvious victim in this prolonged schism.
*Concluding Remarks.*
We believe in a bright future for Okpe Nation; a future with great opportunities for growth and development that will benefit Okpe nationals. We believe that this can be facilitated by a united front of the Okpe Nation ably represented by a powerful Okpe Union and a ceremonial fatherly role of the Orodje. We therefore appeal to you all to persuade HRM Orhue l, Orodje of Okpe, to dissolve the factional executive led by Okakuro Joseph Aboze and withdraw from the court cases. As stated in our letter to the Orodje immediately after the May 15, 2021 election that produced the current National Executive Council of the Okpe Union that I am privileged to lead, we are ready to cooperate with the Udogun Okpe and HRM Orhue I to have a way out of the differences based on the Rule of Law and the autonomy of the Okpe Union.
*Long live the Okpe Nation!*
*Long live the Okpe Union!*
*Long live the Orodje of Okpe!*

RESPONSE OF ABOZE TO THE ABUJA FHC RULING NULLIFYING THE BACKDOOR BOT FOR THE OKPE UNION: LET THE ILLEGAL FACTION STOP DISGRACING THE OKPE NATION.*
*PRESS RELEASE*
The National Executive Council of the Okpe Union was seized this morning (being 6th of May, 2024) of the response of Okakuro Joseph Aboze (who still illegally parades himself as President General of the Okpe Union) to the Federal High Court Ruling vacating its earlier order which effectively nullified the Dick Gberevbie and Austin Ayemidejor led illegal Board of Trustees. Aboze’s response was titled “RE: ABUJA FEDERAL HIGH COURT RULING VACATING AN ORDER GRANTED THE INTERIM MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE OF THE OKPE UNION”.
We shall quote verbatim below part of Okakuro Aboze’s reaction signed by him so as to lay it bare for an objective analysis. Hear Aboze on behalf of the illegal faction below:
“… The court in its ruling says, that “the pleadings at the Federal High Court Abuja are the same as what has been pleaded at the Federal High Court Lagos”.
He continues: “This ruling comes after the ruling in Lagos that had been appealed since 2023. It is crucial to note that the Orodje In Council did not and never dissolved the Executive Committee of the Okpe Union led by Prof. Igho Natufe. This clarification became necessary because the case which is on appeal came up as a result of misunderstanding of how the system works…”
The legitimate National Executive Council of the Okpe Union led by Prof Igho Natufe hereby responds as follows to Joseph Aboze’s most uninformed position quoted above.
- The Ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja on the 30th of April, 2024 which vacated its earlier order granted to the illegal Interim Executive of the Okpe Union which was led by Prof. Emurobome Idolor which handed over to Okakuro Joseph Aboze, has nothing to do with the substantive case that was before the Federal High Court, Lagos which gave its judgment on the 19th of January, 2023 that declared the imposed interim Executive Council led by Prof. Emurobome Idolor illegal and ordered a perpetual injunction restraining them, their privies and those who derive any powers from them from acting or parading themselves as the National leadership of the Okpe Union. The Suit number of the substantive suit which the Judge gave judgment on the 19th of January, 2023 is *Suit No. FHC/L/CS/603/2022*. Rather, the statement in the ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja to wit: “the pleadings at the Federal High Court Abuja are the same as what has been pleaded at the Federal High Court Lagos” refers to the exparte application which the legitimate Okpe Union leadership had filed at the Federal High Court, Lagos (with *Suit No. FHC/L/CP/352/2022),* for an order to appoint trustees in February 2022 which the Prof. Idolor interim, being scared of joining it, hurriedly and surreptitiously went to the Abuja Federal High Court to ask for same prayers, without filing an affidavit of non multiplicity of suits. It is clear that Okakuro Joseph Aboze is totally bereft of any knowledge of what had been transpiring in the Okpe Union. How can someone who could parade himself as the President General of the oldest registered Ethnic Union in Nigeria not even know that the Federal High Court would not entertain a matter which is on appeal as he claimed in his rejoinder?
- The response of Okakuro Joseph Aboze reflects the reaction of a confused leader of a group. His published justification for continuing to parade himself along with his group as Okpe Union Executive is that it was the predecessor executive led by Prof. Emurobome Idolor that the Federal High Court, Lagos declared illegal. They had explained that it was the Board of Trustees chaired by Okakuro Dick Gberevbie with Mr. Austin Ayemidejor as secretary that organised an election for them to emerge and not the Prof. Idolor led group which the court ruled against. Now that the backdoor Board of Trustees has been nullified and declared to have been non-existent at any time, what more arguments remain for them for any legitimacy? You cannot build something on nothing and expect it to stand. On the matter being on appeal which Aboze referenced, it is instructive that the appellants are yet to even be properly before the Court of Appeal as the time had lapsed for them to file their appeal which made them to apply for an extension of time, which argument is even yet to be heard by the Court of Appeal. Similarly, that all parties are duty bound to comply with the judgments of a court of competent jurisdiction unless and until it is reversed or at least a stay of execution is granted, is a trite position of the law. If Okakuro Aboze and his gang “believe in the rule of law” as he claimed, the best thing to do is for him and his gang to dissolve their illegal executive council and recognize the legitimate leadership of the Okpe Union led by Prof. Igho Natufe or step aside and wait for the outcome of their much talked about appeal.
*Conclusion*
How can any sane persons accept the lawlessness being displayed by Messrs Joseph Aboze, Kings Iriri, Jackson Amererhorone and their allies who still illegally parade themselves as the National Executive Council of the Okpe Union? The stay of execution application which the losers at the Federal High Court, Lagos filed is yet to be heard by the court yet they continue parading themselves unlawfully.
It is time for stakeholders of the Okpe Nation to call these persons to order. Contempt of court sanctions are not a panacea for law and order and good governance in any polity. Let Aboze and his gang stop disgracing the Okpe Nation.
Long live the Okpe Nation!
Long live the Okpe Union!
Long live the Orodje of Okpe!
